The three-time Grand Slam champion, Stan Wawrinka has advanced to his 16th major quarterfinals, after the World Number one, Novak Djokovic retired from their fourth-round encounter at Flushing Meadows. The Swiss, Wawrinka will face the fifth seed, Daniil Medvedev from Russia in the last eight round. He will be playing his first-ever major quarterfinals.

The voice of tennis on RMC (a Radio Network) and a French journalist, Eric Salliot mentioned that Stan Wawrinka was sick. Yesterday morning in New York, the 23rd seed, Wawrinka canceled his Swiss Press meeting pertaining to his sickness. Also, there have been reports that he was not feeling well in the locker room after his match against Novak Djokovic on Sunday.

The former US Open champion has a tough match ahead and Wawrinka doesn’t seem fully-fit for his quarterfinal battle with the new era contender, Medvedev. Wawrinka and Medvedev have just met once in their careers. They played against each other in the first round of Wimbledon 2017 and the Swiss conceded a defeat in four-sets.

World Number 24, Wawrinka has entered the second Slam quarterfinals of the season. Previously, he reached the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros 2019, after he played a resilient five-set match against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Wawrinka is yet open his title account his season. This year, he reached the finals at ATP Rotterdam and lost to Gael Monfils. It was his best run on tour so far.

Amongst all the remaining quarterfinalists at the US Open 2019, Stan Wawrinka and Daniil Medvedev are the ace-count leaders in New York, as they have slammed the highest number of aces. Summing up all the aces in their past five matches, both of them have come up with 67 aces at the US Open 2019.

A win over Medvedev might set up a ‘Helvetian-semifinal’, provided the Swiss legend, Roger Federer gets past Grigor Dimitrov in the quarters, and then the New York audience would get to enjoy the all-Swiss semifinals at Flushing Meadows.
