The combat sports world has been buzzing since the announcement of the upcoming Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul boxing match. The bout is set for July 20 in Texas and will be broadcast live on Netflix, marking the streaming giant’s third live sports event. But in a past appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, boxing legend, Roy Jones Jr. had made some interesting revelations about the massive undertaking that is fighting Mike Tyson.

In his conversation with Rogan, Jones had revealed how the bout drew so much attention that the date had to be moved. But in a staggering confession, he also stated how the extended time for preparation may have benefited Mike Tyson, which may also hold significance for the social media star turned boxer, Paul, as he gets ready to step into the squared circle against ‘Iron Mike’!

Mike Tyson faced Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition match billed as “Lockdown Knockdown” held on November 28, 2020, in Los Angeles, California. The bout ended in a controversial split draw but Tyson showcased that he was still capable of moving in his trademark ‘peek-a-boo’ style and impressed a lot of combat sports fans with his performance.

As such, during his appearance on the JRE (Joe Rogan Experience) podcast no. 1548 in October, before the fight, Jones had revealed that “We had a September 12th Date…I wanted him when I was in my prime, so why not take him now. I mean, 12, I mean 6 weeks, that’s easy. And they said, well we got more attention than we expected to get and this happened, and that happened, so we want to move it.”

He also stated that “I’ll be that guy, you know, I don’t back out or nothing, anything like I’m scared of Mike Tyson coz he’s Mike Tyson. It’s just, I know, that in 6 weeks, he had no chance to deal with me. In 12 weeks, we’ll he’d make it a little bit, he’ll have a better chance to deal with me…”

His comments are interesting as years after their exhibition bout, Tyson’s upcoming clash against Jake Paul has also become a massive story in the combat sports world. And at the time of writing, the bout is more than 12 weeks away, so Paul might be in for a rude awakening with the decision to give extended preparation time to Mike Tyson!

Because, as Jones mentioned in another part of the conversation with Joe Rogan,…going in the ring with Mike Tyson has nothing exhibition-ish about it!”

But another prominent figure in the world of boxing has recently indicated that he is skeptical about the outcome of the upcoming clash between Tyson and Paul!

Teddy Atlas raises an eyebrow at the possible outcomes for Paul vs. Tyson

Boxing trainer Teddy Atlas has recently indicated that he isn’t sure about the outcome of the Mike Tyson and Jake Paul bout. In his prior fights, there have been accusations online against Paul for “rigging” his fights.

While he doesn’t believe those accusations to be true, speaking on his YouTube channel, Atlas stated, “I’m not questioning the integrity of Paul. In fact, I like his integrity. I like what I’ve seen in the guy. I’m just saying, if there was a time I would question it, this would be the time.”

He noted the significant age difference between Tyson, who will be 58 at the time of the fight, and Paul and went on to state, “‘I wonder if there’s an agreement because if there’s no agreement, Paul might be making a mistake. … I’m surprised Paul is taking this risk. Power doesn’t disappear even when you’re old.”

This skepticism from a seasoned boxing figure adds intrigue to an already highly anticipated bout. And as demonstrated in his exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr., despite his age, ‘Iron Mike’ remains a terrifying figure for anyone to face inside the ring!
