At UFC 285, Jon Jones captured the vacant heavyweight title and established himself at the top of the 265 lbs division. While there were persistent doubts about him moving up, ‘Bones’ had the last laugh as he left the Octagon with the UFC gold wrapped around his waist. In an impressive outing in the Octagon on Saturday night, the American fighter dispatched Ciryl Gane with ease. Therefore, the Rochester native amassed praise for his performance at the T-Mobile Arena as he put the French fighter to sleep within a couple of minutes into the first round. However, the performance didn’t find an admirer in UFC veteran Chael Sonnen.

The submission grappler notably ranked the heavyweight kingpin’s recent performance as the second worst of his career. The 35-year-old’s fight against Ovince Saint Preux at UFC 197 topped the list.

Following this, the MMA-fighter-turned-analyst recalled, “OSP and there was things going on. Things lined up with that match. That was the single worst version of Jon Jones the sport has ever seen.”

Further, he specified he brought the fight up because the fight went the distance and the 27-1-1 record holder outscored his opponent on all 5 rounds. Similarly, he pointed out, “He [Jon Jones] won the strength battle, the conditioning battle, the understanding battle, the striking battle, and the grappling battle. And that was his worst performance.”

Sonnen believes ‘scared’ Ciryl Gane helped with the clumsy takedown

Sonnen opined that the takedown that proved critical was clumsy. Additionally, the takedown wasn’t on purpose, and it wasn’t something that was drilled.

However, the takedown by the Gaidojutsu black belt holder proved precarious because ‘Bon Gamin’ was scared.

Thus, he expressed, “What John found that he would have had no way to know until he got in there is Ciryl Gane was scared to death. The way Ciryl Gane ran from Jon dropped my job.”
