UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier spoke to Ariel Helwani on the latest iteration of ‘The MMA Hour’. ‘The Diamond’ is fresh off a disappointing loss to Charles Oliveira for the undisputed title at UFC 269’s main event. Poirier was submitted in the third round via RNC after Oliveira secured a lethal back-take.
Poirier was clearly still raw with emotion when looking back at his outing against ‘Do Bronx’. The former interim champion feels he underperformed and has now begun considering a move up in weight. In a rather shocking revelation, Dustin Poirier said that he be done at lightweight after his crushing defeat. Not to mention, painstakingly cutting the weight to make 155-pounds has also become a major hindrance to Poirier.

“I don’t know I’m going to make that cut again. I may never fight at 155-pounds again. I don’t know the future.”
“My cut [for UFC 269] went so smooth, I felt great. Of course that’s because I did all the things I was supposed to do in training camp that made the cut so great. But I don’t know if I want to go through that kind of training camp again where I’m hungry every day, competing in the gym and pushing myself on low calories.”

Dustin Poirier: A welterweight title contender?
‘The Diamond’ believes that he might not get another title opportunity at lightweight after losing in two title fights. Prior to the loss to Oliveira, Dustin Poirier aimed to unify his interim title against consensus lightweight GOAT Khabib Nurmagomedov.
However, in a cruel twist of fate, Nurmagomedov tapped out Poirier via RNC once again after securing a neck crack position initially.

Despite his recent defeat, the future seems exceptionally bright for Dustin Poirier if he moves up to welterweight. He has already started mouthing off with Nate Diaz and could also possibly face former teammate turned rival, Colby Covington.
Given Kamaru Usman, current welterweight champion’s lethality in the wrestling department, it’s safe to say that Poirier will need to sharpen up his grappling. However, he still remains an extremely viable threat to become a top-level welterweight. Fans will be waiting with bated breath to see how Poirier’s career progresses from here on out.
