Famed UFC commentator Joe Rogan had comedian Brian Simpson as his guest on his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience as he discussed the importance of technique over strength in mixed martial arts. Rogan is a bona fide mixed martial artist himself. He has an extensive background in Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Rogan believes that technique is the most important aspect of combat sports. Rogan said, “If you know technique, then strength is important. But strength is not as important as technique. Technique is the most important thing by far.” Rogan then mentioned former UFC champion Georges St-Pierre and his technical abilities.

Joe Rogan believes GSP was one of the biggest fighters in MMA. He said, “Georges St-Pierre was one of the very best wrestlers in MMA. He didn’t wrestle in high school or college. He is from Canada, and where he was from, he didn’t engage in wrestling. He learned wrestling from the Russian nationals that moved to Montreal. So, he learned it as martial arts.”

The 55-year-old mentioned that GSP started learning to wrestle when he was an adult. He also stated that the Russian people who trained the former UFC champion were very technical grapplers.

Joe Rogan states the most important discipline in MMA

The UFC commentator once talked about the most important discipline required to be mastered to become a great mixed martial artist on his podcast JRE MMA show. Although he suggested a person must know everything he can possibly learn in MMA, Rogan still believed that wrestling was the most important skill.

Rogan stated, “There no real one discipline that will work best in MMA. You have to know everything.” He added, “If I was gonna say what discipline’s the most important, I’d say wrestling. Because if you can’t keep a guy from taking you down, he’s gonna be on top of you, he’s gonna hold you down and he’s gonna punch you in the face.”

Joe Rogan claimed that it is a ‘giant’ advantage to be able to hold an opponent down and get on top of them because there isn’t much one can do when someone gets on top of them.
