Jay Cutler wrote in his Instagram story, “Pro Tip of the day”, before giving his tips. He wrote, “#1 Rack Pulls and Deadlifts, To get that really dense, thick slack of muscles across your back rack pulls and deadlifts are awesome – you can get really strong on these and overload the back muscles. Using a combination of both is a great idea because each exercise provides a slightly different stimulus”. Both these exercises deal with heavy weights and mostly impact the Gluteus Maximus (in our hips) and Erector Spinae (muscles that run through the spine).

Cutler wrote in his 2nd tip, “Bent over rows. Bent over rows are the king of adding thickness to the back, I am a huge fan of this exercise. Make sure your shoulders are always pushed backward and you drive back with your elbows by your side”. Another one of those exercises, generally done using a barbell, impacts the Rhomboids, Middle Trapezius, Lower Trapezius, and several other muscles on one’s back.

Although a very popular training routine for bodybuilders, Jay Cutler clearly wrote about avoiding heavy flat bench presses. He instead prefers a Flat Smith Machine press in order to specifically impact and strengthen the muscles in his shoulders, triceps, and chest.
Cutler also prefers dumbbells over barbells due to their safety and productivity in the long run. Taking a jab at many bodybuilders who always lift barbells, Cutler mentioned that it is the ego that pushes a bodybuilder towards it. It is why he believes it’s important to think it through for better sustainability.
