Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1985, 23-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps has long been considered a local celebrity. Often referred to as “The Baltimore Bullet” throughout his swimming career, has ties to his birthplace outside of the water. His choice to deliver the Game Ball for the AFC Championship Game earlier this year highlighted his longstanding links to Baltimore, and he just made headlines once more. Derrick Henry aka “King Henry,” the newest player on the Baltimore Ravens, has Phelps’ support as they prepare for a Super Bowl run.

There is a lot of expectation for Derrick Henry’s impact on the Ravens’ offense following the 2023 season. He tied for second place in the NFL with 1,538 running yards and earlier for tying 13 touchdowns in 2022. Unquestionably, Henry is a favorite among Baltimore sports fans, and who more thrilled to welcome him than Michael Phelps himself, he re-shared an ESPN Instagram post on his story of the news with the caption, “Welcome to Baltimore @ravens.”

Henry was a free agent for a while, many believe it was longer than anyone expected given his impressive ten signed contracts during the NFL’s early negotiation period. For now, his two-year contract is valued at $16 million while Henry has a nine million dollar guarantee for the first year reports Schefter with a potential value of $20 million. King Henry is placed with the team’s current ‘Most Valuable Player’, Lamar Jackson, in this switch. Under the ESPN post, comments are already flooding with someone saying, “I’m trading in my Jersey right now for a Ravens.”

The free agency status change of J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards meant that the Baltimore Ravens needed a starter running back. After playing for the Tennessee Titans for his first eight seasons, Henry is known as a solid workhorse who can be the center of attention for any offense. In addition, Lamar Jackson, the Ravens’ top rusher for the last five seasons, may feel some less pressure with his presence.
