The Los Angeles Sparks finally ran out of their shooting luck. After shooting at more than 45% for a majority of their last 12 games, the shots weren’t falling anymore against the Golden State Valkyries. Kelsey Plum and Co. shot at a meagre 32.8% and from downtown it was even worse at 23.5%. However, the team is viewing it as just a minor setback to their flow, rather than the start of another downhill slope.

“Bad shooting nights happen,” Sparks Coach Lynn Roberts told the reporters after the game. “The worst thing we can do is to dwell on it and second-guess ourselves. How mentally tough we are will determine what the next game looks like. We didn’t shoot well. Turn page, re-attack.”

The Sparks have been one of the best offensive teams in the league, even while that didn’t turn into results initially in the season. The team has been turning a page in the last few weeks and making a run at that playoff spot. The Kelsey Plum-led side are 8-2 in the previous 10 games and will face Seattle Storm next, who are on the other side of the coin when it comes to form. The Storm’s four-game skid was set in motion by none other than the Sparks, who lit the fuse themselves.

After that double-overtime loss, it’s almost like they have forgotten how to win. Each of their last three losses have been by just 4 points. Nneka Ogwumike and her squad are out to exorcise their demons. And what better way than facing the very team that unleashed them? Let’s look at the squad situations of both coming up to the game, along with everything you need to know before this clash.

Seattle Storm vs LA Sparks: Match Preview And Prediction

You would not have expected the Sparks and the Storm to be neck to neck in the standings before the season began. The Sparks were coming off a season with just eight wins, while the Storm were coming off a full season of Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins playing together. Noelle Quinn was looking to build on that chemistry to go for a deep run in the playoffs. However, they are stalled at 16 wins for the last four games, and the Sparks are surging.

The Sparks’ rise is based on their well-coordinated, fast-paced attack built around Kelsey Plum. They are among the best offensive teams in the league, with 105.3 points per 100 possessions. The Storm were once on the same level, but have fallen off in recent games. The Sparks and Storm split two games earlier this season, each winning on the opponent’s court. The difference between the two sides lies on the defensive side of things. Sparks are one of the worst sides in the league when it comes to preventing points, while the Storm are among the best. The only question is which Storm side will turn up as they have conceded above-average points in 4 of the last five games.

Even with that, the main concern remains their offensive fluidity as they have scored only 80.6 points per game in the last 10 games. The new acquisition from the Washington Mystics, Brittney Sykes, is expected to improve the Storm when it comes to their struggling offense. “We’re top in the league in defense right now, but (Sykes) kind of contributes to that with what she can do on the ball, off the ball, guarding multiple positions,” Coach Quinn told the reporters. “At the end of the day, if we play solid defensively, we can get into transition.”

In this tightly matched showdown, balance will be everything, especially with the Sparks capable of punishing teams in transition, too. With ESPN favoring the Storm by a narrow 54.8% margin, execution at both ends of the floor will be crucial. Ultimately, the game may come down to whether the Sparks’ mental toughness can withstand the relentless grit of Ogwumike and Diggins.
