Another player, Anett Kontaveit, was also forced to retire at a young age. The Tennis fraternity is still processing the heart-wrenching news. She was just twenty-seven, but injury decided her fate, and she announced it on Instagram. Sharing this post on her story, Paula Badosa shared her emotional reaction towards the game and Kontaveit’s retirement.

Kontaveit sure had a bright career ahead of her, and people can’t help but feel sorry for her. Badosa shared, “Sport is brutal sometimes. Wish you all the best, @anett_kontaviet. Congrats on an amazing career 💫. ” The Spanish star recently suffered from a spinal stress fracture, demanding her to skip the French Open 2023.

The Estonian player shared, “After several doctor’s visits and consultations with my medical team, I have been advised that I have lumbar disc degeneration in my back. This does not allow for full-scale training or continued competition. Therefore, it is impossible to continue at the top level in such a highly competitive field.”

The  25-year-old empathized with the former world number two as the two players suffered injuries to their spines. Kontaveit was diagnosed with lumbar disc degeneration that cannot allow her to strain physically.

In a demanding sport like Tennis, playing with a chronic disease is hard as it can further complicate the issue and affect the performance.

There is a minute silver lining to the retirement announcement: her taking part in Wimbledon. The WTA star revealed, “I am ready for new challenges after my last effort as a professional tennis player – to enjoy the game and compete as hard as I can at Wimbledon.” She held the Estonian flag high with her career and gave everything to the game.
