Tonight’s edition of SmackDown was the first show of the blue brand after the Royal Rumble, an event that marked the beginning of the Road to WrestleMania for Cody Rhodes after his second consecutive win in the Royal Rumble. The superstar assured from the beginning that he would choose Roman Reigns as his WrestleMania opponent for the undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

However, the situation experienced an unexpected turn after Seth Rollins proposed choosing his World Heavyweight Championship as a better alternative. And now Rhodes has made his call and decided to walk out on Roman Reigns as he found a better opponent for the ‘Tribal Chief’ in Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson. And this booking decision is facing flak from former WWE superstars such as Danielle Moinet, aka Summer Rae.

As soon as the Rock entered the ring to have a staredown with Roman Reigns, Rhodes walked out, hugged the people’s champ, and left for backstage. While this was a moment of joy for several WWE fans who wanted this dream match to happen, this moment was bittersweet for many who saw this as the moment where Cody Rhodes walked out of the opportunity to mainevent WrestleMania as well as dethrone Roman Reigns. This offended many, especially after a buildup that took years. One such voice of dissent was that of former WWE superstar Danielle Moinet, who tweeted, “Imagine handing over your Wrestlemania match that you beat 29 other ppl for…AFTER a two year build. I’m all for twists & turns but make it make sense! Gosh I hope we are ALL wrong. I hope it all makes sense next Fri in a Rock Roman promo, that is if either of them show up to tv”

Now that the promotion has established that the Rock will be facing Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, it means that Rhodes will be facing Rollins for the fourth time in his career. But this one would be for the world heavyweight championship. And considering that the ‘American Nightmare’ previously won all the encounters between the two, maybe fans can witness Rhodes completing his story by holding the championship gold at WrestleMania 40.

However, the fight is less likely to be the main event of the night. And this isn’t the first time that the biggest promotion in the world has been called out for such booking decisions. Fans have often criticized the WWE’s habit of relying on part-time wrestlers to sell tickets. They have previously brought back Batista, Brock Lesnar, and Goldberg to squash talents and hijack the championship belts while rarely showing up to normal tapings of the show.

The same can be said about The Rock appearing for the main event, WrestleMania, when fans are already aware of him being occupied with his commitments to the UFL as well as the TKO. So will this be another one of their bad booking decisions? Or will we possibly get to see the Rock having a championship bout with Reigns and staying for a longer period of time?
