“It Doesn’t Mean [Sh*t]”: Concerning Canelo Alvarez Sparring Footage Sparks Intense Discussion
Follow Us
The fight between David Benavidez and Canelo Alvarez is being wished for, across the globe. Many boxing fans want to see this particular fight go down, as Benavidez has defeated Caleb Plant, and he’s been calling out Canelo consistently. On the other hand, Alvarez has made his stance clear that currently, his priority will be to get a rematch against Dmitry Bivol, after the John Ryder fight on May 6th. So many fans are accusing ‘Cinnamon’ of ducking ‘The Mexican Monster’, and hence a lot of people have started to support Benavidez. So much so that they’re even disregarding his legacy as a ‘P4P King’ and they’re claiming that Benavidez will easily run through him.
One such case recently happened on Twitter, where a user, @ClenbutrolPlugz, shared a sparring video of Canelo Alvarez and Rashidi Ellis. In the video, Alvarez is on the ropes and working on his head movement but the user argued that if this is the case for him against Ellis then he’ll be a way easier opponent for Benavidez.
I know it’s sparring BUT. That is Rashidi Ellis! imagine David Benavidez letting off on him in the ropes #DavisGarcia #CaneloRyder pic.twitter.com/566foK2Vxz

To this harsh claim, boxing promoter Lou DiBella came to the rescue and pointed out the correction the above claim needed. He stated that whenever you’re sparring with anybody, “IT DOESN’T MEAN 💩”. And then he went on to explain that during sparring, boxers don’t seek to outplay their partner, instead they want to try new things and grow as a boxer. So if Alvarez is at the ropes, then it’s because he wants to be there.
Oy vey. This footage leaving the #boxing gym is bush league 🗑️🚮. First of all, IT DOESNT MEAN 💩 … not a DAMN thing. Secondly, sparring for a true pro, championship-caliber, fighter is about working on things. Canelo is on the ropes for a reason; he’s there by CHOICE. Smh! https://t.co/cdSiGkgT9q

Many fans sided with DiBella’s argument and agreed with him on his explanation of a sparring session. A few days ago, a photo went viral where Alvarez was seen lifting double his own body weight.
Fans respond to Canelo Alvarez struggling on the ropes
User @DemocratsOnly said after reading the former statement, that some of these commenters have never been in a boxing gym, otherwise they’d have known better.
Lou some of these guys that comment on boxing have never been in a gym. This session was for Speedy and not Canelo lol. Its called working on something

Another user, @punchingprof, came in agreement with DiBella and stated that you can never know what skills a boxer is trying to work on during sparring. It’s stupid to judge anybody’s prowess based on that.

Exactly. If someone only focuses on their best attributes in sparring, can’t expect much growth to happen. And we have no idea who is working on what in this video. I sparred yesterday and was only allowed to lead – if someone saw video they’d say “why can’t that guy counter!”

In the same vein, user @RTSMightyMike also went on ahead and further explained the difference between open sparring and work.
Exactly. There's Work and then there's Open sparring. This was obviously just work. This is all part of the training process.

@boxing_william mentioned that some of these haters create narratives against Canelo for the sake of expressing hate.

Meanwhile, user @JasonTheFallen pointed out that many always rush to protect ‘Cinnamon’, and the same doesn’t happen with other boxers.
Why everyone always rush to protect Canelo. Y'all don't do this shit with other fighters. Y'all stay silent.
