The year Floyd Mayweather Jr. finally bid goodbye to boxing, Vasyl Lomachenko‘s dominant skills led three boxers to retire in between matches, one after the other. If his last bout in 2016 is considered, it makes four consecutive cases when opponents threw in the towel. So hypothetically, what would have happened if Mayweather Jr. and ‘Loma’ had had a chance to trade punches? Who would have stood out? It seems Joe Rogan has the answer.

A short clip from one of the episodes of ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ made inroads yesterday. Joe Rogan and the guest are audible, discussing Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Vasily Lomachenko. So the UFC commentator said, “Floyd versus Loma.” Had Mayweather Jr. been in his prime, then a breakdown of his style against Lomachenko’s would have been brilliant: “Because Floyd would move toward you like this, he would get right up on you.

It should be interesting to note that in an earlier episode, dating back to 2017, Joe Rogan lavished Vasyl Lomachenko with praise. In conversation with author Thaddeus Russell, he called the Ukrainian “the best.” Invariably drawing a comparison with Mayweather Jr., he said, “…Lomachenko [is], in my eyes [is] the best. The way he moves is insane, and he’s super aggressive. He’s not like Floyd Mayweather, who is arguably the best ever—you know, multiple-time world champion in multiple divisions—but much more defensive oriented, brilliantly defensive, very economical… Lomachenko is on you like glue; he stands right in front of you, and you can’t hit him…

There are no two questions about Lomachenko’s prowess with gloves. Gifted with a superior ring IQ, the Ukrainian, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, is renowned for his speed, footwork, and ability to use his imagination to set up traps for opponents. After an outstanding amateur run that saw him become a world champion quite a few times, he turned to professional boxing in 2013.
