‘Champion-in-recess’ Manny Pacquiao will face the current welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr on August 21st. The Pacman (62-7-2) last fought Keith Thurman in 2019 and Spence (27-0-0) faced Danny Garcia in 2020.
The athletes were initially fighting for just a unification battle for the IBF and the WBC titles. Later, the Ring Magazine welterweight championship was also put on the line, which has been vacant since 2015.
This came as a surprise to fans as the title is usually put up for grabs between top two division contenders. The Ring Magazine acknowledged that this decision is in line with their policies.

This decision came because of a matchup failure between Terence Crawford, currently ranked second in the division, and Errol Spence Jr.

When asked if he would fight Terence Crawford, since he does not want to fight Errol Spence Jr, Pacquiao laughed and replied “one at a time”.
Ahead of his fight on August 21, Manny Pacquiao now has plans to clear out the current top-two contenders in the welterweight division. Pacquiao confirmed he wants to face Terence Crawford after dethroning Spence.
In another interview, boxing’s only eight-division champion clearly said that he would be interested in fighting Crawford as even he is undefeated like Spence.
“I thought a Crawford fight would also be good since he’s also undefeated,” said Manny Pacquiao.
Will Terence Crawford return to fight Manny Pacquiao?
Terence Crawford last fought and won against Kell Brook in November 2020. The #2 contender announced that he is now chasing a Manny Pacquiao fight. He said that his team was trying to close negotiations for that bout prior to booking Kell Brook.
However, the negotiations did not work out because of the Covid-19 outspread. Crawford added after defeating Brook in 2020 that he will try to lock down a fight with Manny Pacquiao next.
