WBA (Regular) Lightweight champion Gervonta Davis will face his arch-nemesis Ryan Garcia this April. The two prospects have been booked to fight on several occasions but have never actually met in the ring. However, this is set to change as fans can finally see them settle their differences in the squared circle. Moreover, it looks like Davis is ready to take some extra measures before the fight to ensure Garcia is mentally and physically weakened.

It was recently revealed that the contract included a rehydration clause which meant Garcia could not gain more than 10 pounds following the weigh-ins. This clause has become a topic of hot debate with polarizing opinions related to the same. However, Garcia feels that this just goes on to show Davis’ character after speaking up about the clause.

He likes to fight people with no power so he’s tryna weight drain me. Then a rehydration clause, I can’t gain more than 10 pounds. There’s a lot of stipulations in there that show the character he has, his integrity and the will of a competitor. He doesn’t have it, he doesn’t have the heat of a champion,” said Garcia.

Davis’ mentor Floyd Mayweather Jr. was also often criticized for adding stipulations to favor him during fights. This even included his fight against Canelo Alvarez where the Mexican revealed that ‘Money’ Mayweather wanted to add a clause before their fight. Now, it looks like ‘Tank’ is also trying to gain every advantage possible before his fight. The fans were also not happy with the WBA champion as they sounded off on him for adding this clause.

Another user named BX Pharoah also sided with Garcia stating that these clauses should not matter. “He’s 100% right! If you know you can beat him what’s with all those bulls*it clauses???” he wrote.

A user named John Sal mocked Davis for taking out a page from ‘TBE’s’ playbook. “Straight from his daddy Floyd’s playbook. Let’s go RG,” he wrote.

Lastly, a user named Alex justme showed his admiration for Garica and claimed he would support him no matter the outcome. “This man earned my admiration…win or loose,” he wrote.

The fans were certainly divided on this controversial clause which has both fans and critics polarized. However, this points out a bigger problem in combat sports which is weight cutting. This topic has been a hotbed for debate ever since weight classes were introduced. Moreover, without transparency in these contracts, it is hard to identify what exactly are the details regarding clauses in fights which needs to be changed.
