The boxing community is waiting with bated breath to hear clear news on Canelo Alvarez‘s next fight. There still remains a lack of clarity on who will be the next opponent to face the Mexican icon. But ESPN‘s Mike Coppinger shared an early morning update on the matter that might rouse some interest.

The eminent sports journalist revealed that after their reported parting, Canelo Álvarez and PBC could be back to the drawing board to finalize a Jaime Munguia fight on Cinco de Mayo. The news follows the undisputed super middleweight champion’s purported reach out to Matchroom and the DAZN team. The post soon found itself flooded with a stream of comments and viewpoints.

Canelo Alvarez and PBC discussing a Jaime Munguia fight May 4 after sides split last week with two fights left on three-fight deal signed in June, sources tell ESPN,” wrote Mike Coppinger. So technically, it should be a new deal. The previous contract that Canelo Alvarez inked last year was a three-fight deal. Out of that, only one, the Jermell Charlo fight, was completed.

According to Coppinger’s news story, Alvarez might have a two-fight agreement with DAZN, covering both the Munguia and the Edgar Berlanga fights. If that has happened before the renewed talks with PBC, he postulated, then it might be for either one or two bouts. The paperwork is still pending and unsigned.

The chances of fights with David Benavidez and Terence Crawford now appear bleak. However, fans seem to have pinned their hopes on either Berlanga or Munguia.

Boxing fans question the choice of opponents of Alvarez

There are some of those who commented that appear to have a few doubts.

Take, for instance, this user who feels precisely where Benavidez lacked that he didn’t merit a fight with Alvarez.

Given that Alvarez is a free agent, this follower asked: Why would DAZN allow Munguia to fight on a PBC card?

Then, this user surmised that the PBC might have allowed Canelo Alvarez to check out a few alternatives. Hence, he might be having a two-fight deal.

This follower highlighted that Jaime Munguia was reportedly never considered in the 3-fight deal Alvarez had with PBC. So they seem to wonder why the Mexican icon doesn’t appear to have any problem fighting him now.

Then the following user appeared flustered. It’s high time Canelo Alvarez made announcements about his next fight. Given the few days left for May, he might as well end with no fight, as it had happened a few years ago.

Fans and followers sound a bit more confused with the new update. Whatever is said and done, at the end of the day, a Canelo Alvarez fight is what they want. But at the same time, it shouldn’t be akin to last year’s Jermell Charlo match, which many felt was a walk in the park for the Mexican superstar.

After the initial post, Mike Coppinger later came out with a clarification. The initial three-fight deal between Canelo Alvarez and PBC went null and void when the former initiated talks with DAZN. Hence, his latest return to PBC might touch upon an altogether new payday. The Jermall Charlo fight may not be considered either.
