Ian Garry’s rivalry with Islam Makhachev may have ended at UFC 330, but the Irishman appears to have already found another welterweight to clash with. After suffering a unanimous decision loss to Makhachev in the main event at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Mobile Arena, Ian Machado Garry confronted fellow welterweight contender Michael Morales backstage. The Ecuadorian had served as the backup fighter for the championship bout, and the two appeared to have some unresolved issues.

A viral clip of the confrontation showed Garry approaching the 27-year-old backstage. The Irishman can be seen accusing Morales of making up stories about an alleged previous encounter between the two fighters.

“All the s—t you talk, it’s okay,” Garry said. “Make sure you back it up. No, I know. I don’t know. Whatever story you made up about meeting me, I’ve never encountered that story. You know that, right?”

Garry then appeared to encourage Morales to focus on his career rather than their apparent disagreement, reminding him that several major opportunities await him in the welterweight division

“Listen. You’re a good fighter. Show up. Keep winning, and you can do anything. Does that make sense?” Garry added. “You’ve got massive fights in this division. You’ve got me. You’ve got Prates. You’ve got Islam. Show up and fight.”

The former title challenger continued praising Morales’ abilities while making it clear that he didn’t appreciate the Ecuadorian’s previous comments.

UFC Fight Night in Doha : Ian Machado Garry v Belal Muhammad Ian Machado Garry of Ireland battles Belal Muhammad of Palestine in a welterweight bout fight during the UFC Fight Night event at Ali Bin Hamad Al Attiyah Arena ABHA Arena in Doha, Qatar. on November 22, 2025.
“You’re an animal. You’re strong. Does that make sense? I don’t know about any story where I’ve met you, and I’ve talked s—t to you,” the Irishman stated. “You know that? In this sport, when people talk s—t, I ignore it. Does that make sense? You’re a good fighter. You’re young. You’re strong up here. That means you can do anything.”

Throughout their run-in, Morales did not appear to engage in the confrontation, although it was unclear whether the language barrier played a role in his limited response.

More importantly, the exact incident Garry was referring to remains unclear. However, Morales has previously spoken about an alleged confrontation involving Garry that could explain why tensions between the two welterweights have escalated.

The 19-0 undefeated welterweight contender once accused Ian Garry of confronting his teammate at the UFC Performance Institute. Though Morales didn’t reveal the exact timeline, Sherdog reported on the incident in April 2026. According to Morales, he went to confront Garry himself, but the former title challenger had already left the building before he could reach him.

Given Ian Garry’s comments backstage at UFC 330, it is possible that he was referring to that incident when he questioned Morales about the story.

Whatever the original disagreement was, Garry appeared to be trying to make his position clear rather than escalate the situation into a physical confrontation. He repeatedly emphasized the Ecuadorian’s potential and urged the young contender to focus on winning fights.

However, when it comes to backstage scuffles, this isn’t the first time the Dublin native has found himself caught up in one.

Ian Garry and a brief recap of backstage confrontations

After defeating Belal Muhammad at UFC Qatar last year, Ian Garry wanted to congratulate the main event winner, Arman Tsarukyan, on his victory over Dan Hooker backstage. But Tsarukyan was accompanied by his teammate Khamzat Chimaev, who wasn’t particularly happy to see the Dublin native there.

Soon, a clip showed Garry respectfully interacting with both Tsarukyan and Chimaev after UFC Qatar. However, after the former middleweight champion allegedly pushed him, the two got into a brief confrontation that almost went too far. Thankfully, no one was injured, but it was another instance that turned ugly pretty quickly. After his interaction with Chimaev went south, Garry addressed the run-in during the post-fight interview, calling ‘Borz’ “childish” for throwing a tantrum. Garry also claimed that Khamzat lacked the class of a champion.

Well, that’s one of those instances involving a fighter like Ian Garry, who is often respectful toward his opponents, finding himself caught up in a confrontation. But he’s certainly not alone, as the UFC world has witnessed quite a few such incidents over the years.

Back in 2019, Jorge Masvidal appeared in London to face former 170-pound title challenger Darren Till at the O2 Arena. However, the former BMF champion ended up getting into an altercation with Leon Edwards backstage after the former champion heckled him during an interview, which Masvidal found highly disrespectful. Similarly, Nick Diaz once got into a backstage altercation with Jason Guida after defeating his brother, Clay Guida, at UFC 199 in 2016.

For now, though, Ian Garry’s immediate future remains uncertain after his loss to Islam Makhachev. Whether his latest backstage confrontation eventually turns into a UFC fight remains to be seen.

Dana White believes Ian Machado Garry wasted the best opportunity of his career at UFC 330. ‘The Future’ challenged Islam Makhachev for the UFC welterweight title in the main event in Philadelphia tonight, and while the Irishman surely made the fight a truly competitive one, the champion ultimately defended his title by unanimous decision, with the judges scoring the bout 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 in Makhachev’s favor.

However, as per Dana White, the outcome could have been very different, and Ian Garry only has himself to blame. The Irishman displayed all the tools to pull off the upset, especially with his excellent takedown defense against Islam Makhachev and relentlessly targeting the champion’s body with some brutal strikes. But the one thing that Ian Garry lacked tonight, as per the UFC boss, was the killer instinct to seize the moment in the fifth round.

“I felt like tonight was a setup for the upset,” White said at the post-event press conference. “I felt like the upset could happen tonight with so much on the line, all the records that Islam has, and he’s gonna break Anderson Silva’s record. There’s weight classes for a reason, and Ian Garry is a big, rangey, strong guy who has great takedown defense. I mean, if you look at his takedown defense tonight against Islam, it was impressive.

“I think that Ian is a talented guy. If he had even an ounce of killer instinct in that fifth round, he had been beating him to the body. Islam’s whole, I think, right side was beat up; his face was beat up. You don’t come out, hug, and shake hands in the (final round); that s— drives me f—— crazy when there’s so much at stake, and there’s also a lot of mental gamesmanship, whatever you wanna call it in this game.”

According to Dana White, Ian Garry should have seen the last round as an opportunity to finish the fight rather than simply look to win another five-minute period. The UFC CEO even imagined how different the outcome could have been if ‘The Future’ entered the final round with a more aggressive mindset.

“You come out in that fifth round with a flying knee or something crazy, and you try to finish the fight,” he continued. “I think that this is one of those fights that Ian will go back and watch and say, ‘F—, wish I could do that over again.’

“If Ian came out of that f—— corner like, like, a raging f—— bull, you know, we might be having a different conversation right now.”

Dana White’s criticism did not necessarily target Ian Garry’s personality. He made it clear that he respects the Irishman’s character. His problem was that ‘The Future’ seemed unable to entirely separate that side of himself from the fighter once the bell rang. And that mindset was especially important given who Garry was standing across from.

“I think that Ian’s a classy guy, is what I think. And he always shows class,” White added. “He did before the fight; he goes over and shakes all the corners’ hands and all that stuff. It’s great. But when that f—— bell rings, you gotta switch, you gotta switch all that s— off and go in, definitely gotta do it in the fifth round.

“After he fought a great fight against Islam, who everybody in this room and everybody else is saying, ‘Well, we might start talking about GOAT.’ You don’t go shake the f——- GOAT’s hand going into the fifth round. You come out to f—— annihilate him. That just has to be your mindset. In my humble opinion.”

And well, many fans would argue that while Ian Garry surely lacked the killer instinct to finish the fight at UFC 330, he did deliver more damage compared to Islam Makhachev, who did secure multiple takedowns but failed to cause any significant harm to the Irishman in his record-17th consecutive UFC win.

Another factor that had all the hopes high for fight fans was the fact that this was the second coming in the legendary Irish vs. Dagestani MMA rivalry. But rather than diving into that narrative, the fighters, especially Ian Garry, opted to go the other way.

Ian Garry redefined the Irish-Dagestani rivalry with Islam Makhachev at UFC 330

Ian Garry and Islam Makhachev’s rivalry was supposed to carry the echoes of the iconic feud between Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Instead, the two fighters went in the completely opposite direction.

After ‘The Notorious’ and Nurmagomedov’s feud turned into one of the most brutal rivalries in UFC history ahead of UFC 229 in 2018, ‘The Future’ and Makhachev purposefully avoided turning their title fight into another personal conflict.

In fact, during UFC 330 fight week, Ian Garry spent more time arguing with a journalist than exchanging insults with the reigning welterweight champion.

At the press conference, The Mac Life’s Oscar Willis asked Islam Makhachev if he was surprised by the strong booing directed toward the Irishman. Makhachev, leaning towards the rivalry, claimed that he wasn’t surprised nobody likes Ian Garry, considering that he himself wasn’t especially fond of the Irishman.

And when Willis tried to continue pushing the subject, Garry unexpectedly stepped in.

“What you’re doing now is just trying to cause trouble; don’t do it,” Garry told the journalist. “I thought we were cool; don’t do it. That’s just putting words in his f—– mouth, and you know it.

“If he wanted to say that, he can be honest and say that. But your job as a journalist is to be professional and stick to the f—— sport. This is the biggest fight of the year; I think there’s more important things to talk about.”

The unexpected lack of hostility continued throughout the week. Instead, they took a much more wholesome route. After their first face-off, Islam Makhachev unknowingly left Ian Garry’s son Leo disappointed after leaving before getting the opportunity to meet his young fan.

As a result, the toddler got emotional, with the Irishman promising that he would eventually arrange the meeting. And well, that occasion came later in fight week, when Makhachev met Ian Garry’s son and fulfilled the young fan’s wish.

So, as we can see, there was no Conor McGregor-Khabib-style animosity before the fight. Instead, Ian Garry and Islam Makhachev showed a remarkably respectful version of the Irish-Dagestani rivalry—and even after five rounds of competition, the tension never reached the level seen between their predecessors.

For Dana White, however, respect can only go so far once the cage door closes. After this fight, he feels Ian Garry’s next step is definitely to understand when to set aside his class and embrace the ruthless instinct required to become a UFC champion.

Islam Makhachev created UFC history at UFC 330, but his record-breaking win over Ian Garry left many far from impressed. The Dagestani phenom successfully defended his UFC welterweight title for the first time against ‘The Future,’ winning via unanimous decision after five hard-fought rounds in Philadelphia. More importantly, the win propelled him to 17 consecutive UFC wins, breaking his tie with Anderson Silva and making him the fighter with the longest winning streak in UFC history.

But while the result was historic, the performance was instantly criticized, especially since Islam Makhachev relied too heavily on his wrestling throughout the match, regularly taking Ian Machado Garry down and driving him into lengthy grappling exchanges that rarely looked like a serious threat.

To make the optics look worse, ‘The Future’ showed impressive takedown defense and repeatedly worked his way back to his feet, despite the champion’s continued effort to drag him into the clinch and control him against the fence.

Even though the Dagestani fighter came real close to finishing Ian Garry with a D’Arce choke, the Irishman successfully defended it. It was only in the final round that Makhachev looked real convincing, taking Ian Garry’s back and securing a body triangle, doing just enough to effectively close out the fight and get the decision win.

Throughout the fight, the Irishman had his moments, particularly with body kicks and the ability to defend against numerous of Islam Makhachev’s takedown attempts. However, the champion’s control and persistence ultimately carried him to another victory. And that’s precisely where the criticism began.

To some fans, Islam Makhachev’s performance represented the control-heavy approach that recent revisions to MMA’s judging philosophy were meant to discourage.

The Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports revised the Unified Rules of MMA last year, emphasizing damage when evaluating who wins a round. Under the revised framework, damage is expected to be the primary consideration, with dominance and duration as secondary factors.

That is, just spending long periods of a round controlling an opponent is not supposed to outweigh meaningful damage inflicted by the fighter being controlled.

As a result, Islam Makhachev’s UFC 330 performance has sparked an interesting debate. While he obviously controlled major parts of the bout and constantly enforced his grappling game, Ian Garry’s face showed considerably less visible damage than the champion’s, which several fans pointed out as evidence that control alone should not have been enough, as it was ‘The Future’ who dealt the most damage tonight.

To further discourage stalling, even Dana White and the UFC have introduced a finish bonus, permanently bumping their standard performance bonuses up to $100,000 explicitly for fighters who secure a definitive finish.

But it seems like the number simply wasn’t big enough for Islam Makhachev, who secured his 11th decision win tonight, and second back-to-back since winning the title over Jack Della Maddalena last year.

This victory, however, still cemented Makhachev’s position in UFC history. His 17-fight victory streak still stands alone at the top of the promotion’s record books, and he still holds the welterweight championship.

However, for many fight fans, this very historic feat was overshadowed by a performance they considered too conservative.

Fans slam Islam Makhachev’s record-breaking win at UFC 330

Most of the criticism on social media actually came from fans who had expected more from Islam Makhachev on the biggest night of his career.

As the criticism came from fans who had expected more from Makhachev on the biggest night of his career.

One fan questioned in the comments whether the champion’s best days could already be behind him, “Very underwhelming performance tho Islam may be getting washed”

Another admitted that even after backing the champion, the performance failed to convince him: “I bet on Islam but bruh I was not Convinced he did enough to secure the Win.”

Even fans who count the welterweight champion among their favorites were unhappy with the approach, with one writing, “Bro islam is one of my favorite fighters but facts are facts he had to stall the fight to win.”

Another summarized the criticism more bluntly: “Sacrificed entertainment for goat status”

The performance also prompted some fans to push back against comparisons between Makhachev and other all-time greats: “Please don’t put this dude in jones conversations with that wrestler stalling s—”

Several viewers focused on the visible damage, or lack thereof, as evidence that they felt Garry had done more meaningful work. They wrote comments such as, “Look at both their faces and tell me who really won,” and “Someone can win without dealing 0 damage? Hahaha look at Islam’s face and Ian’s face.”

Others reduced the Dagestani’s strategy to a single description: “Professional staller”

Another fan argued that Islam Makhachev’s approach becomes increasingly predictable whenever he encounters serious resistance: “As soon as Islam gets in a tough fight he legit just holds people.”

And one particularly frustrated viewer felt the champion simply hadn’t done enough offensively despite controlling the fight, “Landed one shot all fight, a whole lot of hugging with no submission attempts or damage. The dude lost.”

So, while Islam Makhachev may have left Philadelphia with the UFC’s longest winning streak, the manner of his latest victory has ensured that his historic night will also be remembered for the debate surrounding control versus damage.

At the Xfinity Mobile Arena, the excitement was gradually building toward a climax when a major announcement arrived. With more than two months still remaining, Dana White and team interrupted the broadcast of UFC 330, headlined by Islam Makhachev and Ian Garry Machado, to share details surrounding UFC 333.

Set for October 24 in Abu Dhabi, the card will feature the much-anticipated showdown between featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and top contender Movsar Evloev, who will now headline a stacked card featuring Petr Yan‘s bantamweight title defense against former champion Merab Dvalishvili in their trilogy bout as the co-main event. The presence of many more prominent names across the weight divisions makes UFC 333 a potential contender for the best card of the year.

“BANGER CARD UFC 333. Volk vs. Evloev. Yan vs. Merab,” sharing the fight card poster of UFC 333, MMA content creator Dovy’s X post read.

At the top of the bill stood Alexander Volkanovski. Following the first title defense of his second reign as a featherweight champion, the Australian star faces the unbeaten Movsar Evloev. The Russian has remained near the top of the title picture for a long time.

Active in the UFC since 2018, the law graduate extended his nine-fight winning streak in the UFC by defeating the then-unbeaten Lerone Murphy at UFC London on March 1. The fight was deemed an unofficial title eliminator by most.

BANGER CARD UFC 333

Volk vs Evloev
Yan vs Merab pic.twitter.com/8SmyuVE06o
— Dovy (@DovySimuMMA) August 16, 2026

If not similar, a familiar storyline unfolds in the co-main event, where Petr Yan meets Merab Dvalishvili for the third time. The two share a history that goes back three years, when they first met at a UFC Fight Night in March 2023. The Georgian won the bout by unanimous decision. The pair met again at UFC 323 in December last year, where Yan prevailed and defeated Dvalishvili on the scorecards.

As with Volkanovski, the trilogy in October marks the Russian’s first title defense in his second stint as a bantamweight champion.

What adds a layer to the showdown is that all four fighters competing in the main and co-main events are currently ranked in the men’s top-20 pound-for-pound rankings.

But the depth doesn’t end there with the main card featuring several more intriguing matchups.

It begins with the two top-ranked flyweight contenders, Lone’er Kavanagh and Ramazan Temirov. With the divisional champion Joshua Van defending his title against top-ranked Alexandre Pantoja at UFC 331, the fight between the young Englishman and the Uzbek, who remains unbeaten in the UFC, looks like a potential highlight.

The matchup is particularly important for Kavanagh, who comes off a submission loss to Brandon Royval at UFC 329. UFC 333 will be his third appearance in 2026.

The penultimate fight on the main card features the heavyweight duel between Alexander Volkov and Rizvan Kuniev. At UFC 333, the fight between the two Russians could have major implications, with both entering as top-10 contenders.

On a two-fight winning streak that includes wins over Waldo Cortes-Acosta and Jailton Almeida, Volkov looks to improve his standing before champion Tom Aspinall makes a comeback and potentially shakes up the weight class. Kuniev has enjoyed a similar run, defeating Almeida before knocking out Tyrell Fortune, with both wins coming this year.

The Dagestan native could considerably improve his ranking if he defeats a highly regarded fighter like Volkov.

The most surprising matchup appears to be that of Aaron Pico. Coming off the loss to Lerone Murphy on his UFC debut, the wrestling standout rebounded with a win over Patricio Pitbull at UFC 327 on April 11. Months later, during a slip-up, former champion Aljamain Sterling revealed that Pico will be booked against Youssef Zalal in his next fight.

Instead, Pico now returns to face another Englishman on the card, Arnold Allen, who will be making his third appearance in 2026.

Beyond these main card bouts, the preliminary card also offers plenty of excitement.

UFC 333: The prelims refuse to take a back seat

There are two light heavyweight bouts featured in that section. The first one has former title challenger Dominick Reyes facing the Russian Azamat Murzakanov, who suffered a defeat from Paulo Costa at UFC 327.

In the second bout, Ukrainian Nikita Krylov will fight Abdul Rakhman Yakhyaev from Turkey.

Before middleweights Abus Magomedov and Cam Rowston clash, the event is expected to open with the lightweight matchup between American Grant Dawson and Nurullo Aliev from Tajikistan.

Overall, the UFC has put together a deep lineup with meaningful matchups across the card. While days leading up to the event may witness some changes, the effort has made UFC 333 one of the most intriguing events as the year enters its final stretch.

Mackenzie Dern successfully defended her UFC strawweight title at UFC 330, defeating Gillian Robertson by unanimous decision after five competitive rounds. However, while Dern ultimately walked away with her belt, one moment from the opening round became a major talking point among fans.

Dern entered the co-main event looking to showcase the improved striking that has helped transform her into a UFC champion.

From the opening bell, the Brazilian-American mixed martial artist scored well by landing a couple of straight punches mixed with leg kicks, all finding their mark. Soon after, the fight hit the mat, where the strawweight champion truly shined. Dern spent some time in top position, landing several shots before eventually taking the back and applying a tight rear-naked choke in the final minute of the first round, or at least it seemed that way.

Watching the submission attempt, Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier both thought Mackenzie Dern was about to finish her opponent in the opening round. But the camera angle then provided a much clearer look at the sequence, revealing that Dern’s choke was actually under Robertson’s chin and not properly across her neck. Because of that, Robertson survived the opening round without tapping, and the fight stretched all the way to the final bell at the end of the fifth round, with Dern retaining her belt after winning four of the five rounds.

If we look at the stats by ESPN, the 33-year-old clearly dominated her opponent. Dern landed 65 significant strikes, controlled the fight for 10:48, and successfully completed 4 of 6 takedown attempts. On the other hand, Gillian Robertson trailed considerably, landing only 49 significant strikes, recording 6:47 of control time, and completing just 1 of 3 takedown attempts. Given that disparity, it makes perfect sense that the judges awarded the first four rounds to Dern, with Robertson only taking the final round.

But despite the champion’s victory, some fans remained focused on Joe Rogan’s incorrect call of her choke attempt in the first round. They didn’t mince their words while calling out the UFC’s longtime commentator for his mistake.

Fans Slam Joe Rogan for Misjudging Mackenzie Dern vs. Gillian Robertson at UFC 330

One fan wrote, “Joe Rogan horrible call, saying it’s over then she lasts the round and he says nothing after, smb please check his horrible calls.”

Following that, another fan shared their thoughts, commenting, “Joe Rogan just said it’s over, and it’s not #UFC.”

Continuing the wave of backlash, another fan wrote, “Joe Rogan ‘that’s it, it’s a wrap it’s over’ Fighter survives and pops out of submission .. Every. Single. Time ”

Throughout his more than two-decade career, Joe Rogan has faced backlash from fans over his commentary on multiple occasions. However, that criticism has increased recently, especially when Rogan animatedly calls out a fight-ending sequence that ultimately turns out to be a misjudgment.

Last year, the 59-year-old wasn’t happy with how the referee stopped the fight between Tatsuro Taira and Brandon Moreno at UFC 323. At first, Daniel Cormier said the official didn’t give the Mexican former champion enough time to recover, a take Rogan agreed with. However, the replay showed Taira clearly dealing damage. As a result, fans also called out Rogan and Cormier for their commentary.

In fact, a more recent instance happened at UFC 329 when Rogan called out the referee for stopping Luke Riley’s vicious knockout against Kai Kamaka III. Again, the replay showed that Riley could have inflicted unnecessary damage had he continued landing shots, and the Englishman even responded to Rogan’s criticism of the stoppage, calling it “baffling.”

Frustrated with Rogan’s continued mistakes, one fan wrote that his fight calling is bad but still believes his comedy is worse, saying, “Joe Rogan is so bad at calling fights. Not as bad as his comedy but still a—.” Another user simply wanted the UFC color commentator to “stfu,” which might not be very possible since he earns a living through commentary and podcasting.

That said, even though fans getting livid over Rogan’s call is understandable, he can get some benefit of the doubt in this particular UFC 330 case. The initial camera angle made it appear that Dern had actually locked in a legitimate submission, only for a better view to reveal that wasn’t the case.

Still, that doesn’t completely rule out Rogan’s tendency to misjudge a fight-ending sequence.

Edson Barboza’s final UFC fight ended with an emotional retirement speech, but before the Brazilian legend officially walked away, his corner found itself under fire from fans who believed the fight should have been stopped between rounds.

‘Junior’ went one-on-one against Esteban Ribovics at UFC 330 on Saturday night, with the 40-year-old ultimately suffering a second-round TKO loss.

“Every single fight, I promise, I did my best,” an emotional Barboza told Joe Rogan after the fight. “Thank you, thank you so much.”

Ribovics dominated most of the first round, landing numerous blows and opening a cut on Barboza. The Argentine continued to press him from close range, limiting the UFC veteran’s ability to use his kicks.

By the end of the round, Barboza had been rocked and dropped before grabbing onto ‘El Gringo’ to survive. He returned to his corner with his leg split open and bleeding, and his eye was also clearly damaged. But despite it all, the 40-year-old was sent back for the second round.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – AUGUST 28: (R-L) Edson Barboza of Brazil battles Giga Chikadze of Georgia in a featherweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at UFC APEX on August 28, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC)

As expected, Esteban Ribovics immediately went back to work, ultimately trapping Edson Barboza against the fence and delivering a barrage of punches and elbows, forcing Herb Dean to intervene to end the fight.

The 40-year-old finishes his career with a 24-15 record after more than 15 years in the UFC. And his very impressive resume includes wins against Anthony Pettis, Gilbert Melendez, Beneil Dariush, and Dan Hooker, with his spinning wheel-kick knockout of Terry Etim being one of the most legendary finishes in UFC history.

But instead of focusing only on the renowned striker’s farewell, fight fans instantly switched their attention to his corner, questioning why he was allowed to continue after such a disastrous first round.

It is worth noting that the criticism comes amid an increasing discussion about corner stoppages, following similar incidents involving Billy Ray Goff at UFC Vegas 120 and Tyrell Fortune at UFC Abu Dhabi.

For the unaware, just a few days ago in Vegas, even UFC legend and broadcaster Daniel Cormier questioned the decision-making in Billy Ray Goff’s corner to send him back out for a third round after receiving a brutal battering in the first ten minutes.

“You could see his orbital bone is broken—look at his eye,” Cormier said on the broadcast. “Look at his right eye. And then when he got hit on the right eye, he went down. The coach told him, ‘Don’t engage, just circle and essentially run.’ Why not just stop the fight?

“The writing was on the wall, especially if that’s the advice you’re giving your guy going into the third round.”

So, it was no surprise that seeing Edson Barboza end up in such bad shape just days after this controversy, and that too in his final fight did not sit well with fans, as they quickly turned their attention toward his corner and questioned why he was allowed to continue after such a damaging first round.

Fans blast Edson Barboza’s corner for letting retirement fight continue at UFC 330

The criticism began almost immediately, with one fan pointing specifically to the condition of Barboza’s leg and the damage he had already absorbed: “Awful call by Edson’s corner; his leg was cut open, he got beat bad in the first and was stumbling. They really should not have sent him back out there ,” a fan wrote on X.

Others argued that allowing a fighter to continue in that condition could have much more serious consequences. “Dude, seriously. That’s how you get your fighter really hurt or KILLED. Smh.”

Another fan was even more direct about what Barboza’s team should have done between rounds: “A shame on Edson Barboza’s corner. Throw the towel!”

The lack of a corner stoppage was also highlighted by another viewer, who felt Barboza had already taken enough punishment before the second round even began:

“The lack of corner stoppages strikes again. Edson Barboza should not have been sent back out there based on the gash in his shin, let alone the fact that there’s nothing more for the Brazilian to fight for. Round 2 was an extra battering to add insult to injury,” a fan wrote.

Another fan echoed the same sentiment, writing, “Barboza Corner should have stopped that fight between rounds.”

His age also became part of the discussion, with one viewer questioning why a 40-year-old veteran should have been exposed to additional damage in what was already his final fight: “If I was in his corner, I would have thrown in the towel at the end of the first round. Why let a 40-year-old fighter take unnecessary damage?”

And for another fan, the conclusion was simple: “Edson Barboza is a legend, but that fight had no business going that long.”

The footage of UFC veteran Edson Barboza sitting on the stool, nursing a cut on his leg during his lightweight bout against Esteban Ribovics at UFC 330, left many, including the commentators Joe Rogan, Jon Anik, and Daniel Cormier, shocked.

“A giant cut on the leg of Edson Barboza ,” the UFC on Paramount+ X post read, featuring twenty seconds of footage of the injury following the first round.

With Barboza sitting on the stool, his corner tended to his face, wiping the blood and sweat that followed a grueling exchange in the first round. What caught everyone’s attention, however, was the bleeding cut on top of his right shin.

“He’s got a giant cut on the top of his foot. It might be broken,” Joe Rogan was heard saying. He soon added, “Yeah, the soft end of his foot. That’s what it is.”

Cormier followed, saying, “You can stop the fight. You can stop the fight here.”

That concern stemmed from the events that occurred during the break before the second round of the bout between Edson Barboza and Esteban Ribovics.

A decade younger than Barboza, the Argentine knocked him out with a flurry of punches on the main card of UFC 330, headlined by Islam Makhachev and Ian Garry Machado.

August 16, 2025, Chicago, Il, USA: UFC 319: DU PLESSIS VS CHIMAEV – CHICAGO, IL – AUGUST 16 : Edson Barboza during his fight against Drakkar Klose in a Lightweight bout during the UFC 319 Du Plessis vs. Chimaev event at United Center on August 16, 2025 in Chicago, IL Chicago USA – ZUMAr187 20250816_zsp_r187_046 Copyright: xJustinxRenfroex

That the bout extended almost halfway into the second round was surprising. The fight unfolded on expected grounds, with both Barboza and Ribovics going at each other with kicks and combinations. But as the exchange progressed, the Argentine prospect appeared to gain an upper hand, with one of his shots leaving a deep gash under the Brazilian’s eye.

Taking control, Ribovics dropped Barboza late in the first round. Thanks to the horn, the latter managed to survive, though. Things were, however, not looking good given the deep cut Barboza had on his right leg.

As images of the wound began to appear, Rogan and Cormier worried that the blood seeping from the cut would flow onto the canvas, making it slippery and putting both fighters at considerable risk.

The fight, however, resumed. Ribovics, meanwhile, came prepared to finish the fight. Throwing punch after punch, he made Barboza look helpless until referee Herb Dean stepped in to protect him from further punishment, waving off the fight with half a minute left.

Edson Barboza walks away with a lifetime of memories

With that, a journey that began more than seventeen years ago finally came to an end. Tearful and emotional, 40-year-old Edson Barboza later took off his gloves and bid goodbye to the sport that made him a familiar name in the community. This departure clearly didn’t end the way he might have wished.

“I just say, ‘Thank you,'” Barboza said as Joe Rogan held the mic. “I gave my best every single day. Every single fight, I really give my best. I hope you guys enjoyed. Thank you.”

Barboza’s emotional farewell follows what is now a four-fight losing streak. Beyond those defeats, the Rio de Janeiro native, who has a string of Muay Thai and kickboxing fights on his record, boasts appearances in high-profile fights, including those against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, Tony Ferguson, and Donald Cerrone.

While he suffered losses in those fights, the way he fought, giving his best, clearly endeared Braboza to fans, who admired his striking abilities.

The Brazilian’s case is not unprecedented in the UFC, though. It mirrors the circumstances involving Jack Shore and Joanderson Brito. Fighting at UFC 301 on May 4, 2024, heavy kicks from Brito battered Shore’s legs. Unlike Barboza-Ribovics, however, the fight was stopped by the cageside physician after Shore developed a deep laceration on his shin.

For Ribovics, the win should provide a much-needed boost after the loss he suffered to Mateusz Gamrot at UFC 327 on April 11, in Miami, Florida. Following his knockout victory over Thomas Paull in Dana White’s Contender Series in 2022, Ribovics suffered a setback on his promotional debut when Loik Radzhabov outpointed him at UFC 285.

Despite losses to Nasrat Haqparast and Gamrot, Ribovics has managed to build a competitive record, and the win over Barboza could now take him to another level.

Herb Dean’s night at UFC 330 appeared to be heading in the wrong direction after the veteran referee was repeatedly booed by the crowd at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. It became particularly apparent when Dean stepped in to officiate the prelims fight between Tresean Gore and Vicente Luque. However, the longtime official eventually earned the approval of fans after making a timely stoppage that prevented a UFC veteran from absorbing unnecessary punishment in what turned out to be his final fight.

Herb Dean officiated the lightweight fight between Esteban Ribovics and Edson Barboza. From the opening bell, Ribovics looked like the better fighter as he brought the fire to the UFC veteran. He tagged Barboza multiple times during the first round, and it seemed like the Argentinian could score a quick finish. But Barboza managed to survive, only to endure another barrage of strikes. The Brazilian suffered a nasty injury during the fight when a leg-kick collision with Ribovics left his right shin split open. Blood was gushing from the cut as the 40-year-old went into the next round.

The second round proved to be the beginning of the end for Edson Barboza.

Ribovics continued the onslaught, dropping the Brazilian MMA veteran with heavy strikes. However, Dean, sensing no resistance from Barboza, quickly stepped in to wave off the contest at 1:32 of round 2, saving the 40-year-old from taking any further damage. This earned Dean praise from many in the MMA community.

Regardless, after having suffered his fourth defeat in a row, Edson Barboza finally decided to hang up his gloves, bringing his MMA career of more than a decade to an end. He broke down in tears as he announced his retirement during the post-fight interview.

Understandably, Barboza’s latest loss would hurt more than any of his previous fights because it came in his final bout. But he has definitely endured a couple of mid-fight injuries throughout his career and even fought through them to secure the win.

August 16, 2025, Chicago, Il, USA: UFC 319: DU PLESSIS VS CHIMAEV – CHICAGO, IL – AUGUST 16 : Edson Barboza during his fight against Drakkar Klose in a Lightweight bout during the UFC 319 Du Plessis vs. Chimaev event at United Center on August 16, 2025 in Chicago, IL Chicago USA – ZUMAr187 20250816_zsp_r187_046 Copyright: xJustinxRenfroex

In 2021, Barboza fought Shane Burgos at UFC 262, where the Brazilian suffered an injury during the fight. Back then, the Rio native also bled profusely from the wound. However, the result turned out very differently, as Barboza scored a highlight-reel delayed knockout over Burgos after landing a solid jab-right hook combination in the third round.

Following that, another instance came during his fight with Sodiq Yusuff in 2023. After an early flurry from his opponent, Barboza suffered some heavy cuts and deep bruising on his face. But he once again battled through the adversity to claim victory via unanimous decision. Unfortunately, he couldn’t pull off that magic once again tonight.

But while the MMA world suddenly turned its attention toward honoring Barboza’s remarkable career, Herb Dean also received praise for his timely stoppage in the City of Brotherly Love.

“Time to give Herb Dean some cheers after that stoppage. It was enough already,” MMA Fighting’s Damon Martin wrote on X.

Following the seasoned journalist, several others also praised Herb Dean for his timely fight stoppage.

Herb Dean gets redemption after stopping Edson Barboza fight at UFC 330

One fan wrote, “Herb’s interruption was absolutely spot-on. So sad that Edson’s last fight had to end like this… it’s really tough to watch a legend bow out in this way. I hope they put together a cool tribute to release now.”

Following that, another fan also believed that Dean made the right call with the stoppage, writing, “Herb Dean finally makes a wise decision.”

Herb Dean, one of the sport’s longtime veteran referees, often finds himself embroiled in controversies over his officiating. Recently, Dean was caught in a heated dispute with former champion Alex Pereira, who even wanted the UFC to cut the seasoned referee after he failed to call out Ciryl Gane’s illegal back-of-the-head shots at the UFC White House. But that wasn’t all.

This year has been especially rough for Dean, as he again found himself at the center of controversy over his officiating at UFC Baku. He didn’t deduct a point from Shara Magomedov despite the Russian committing multiple fouls against Michel Pereira. Alex Pereira, once again calling out Dean’s mistake, labeled him a “coward” and blamed the referee for his compatriot being cut from the UFC following the loss.

Following those controversies, Herb Dean can finally breathe a sigh of relief after making a swift decision to save Edson Barboza from further punishment at UFC 330. Because of this, fans kept praising the veteran referee for getting the call right. One fan wrote, “Good job by Herb Dean to get in there.”

Another user believed Dean showed mercy toward the Brazilian, writing, “Herb Dean with a mercy stoppage. Edson Barboza is done. #UFC330”

Continuing the string of positive reactions, another fan was simply glad to see Dean make the right call after a long time, writing, “Herb Dean does something right for once #UFC330.”

At tonight’s event, Herb Dean definitely redeemed himself by saving retired veteran Edson Barboza from taking unnecessary punishment. But it will be interesting to see whether the veteran official can continue his streak or finds himself entangled in another controversy.

Jeremiah Wells, the lone fighter from Philadelphia on tonight’s card, didn’t exactly receive a hero’s welcome from his hometown crowd. His opponent, Myktybek Orolbai, looked like the clear fan favorite, with the Kyrgyz fighter receiving a massive ovation from the Xfinity Mobile Arena audience while Wells was met with noticeable boos. However, after their welterweight bout ended in a major upset, the tension surrounding the matchup reportedly spilled into the stands.

In the prelims, Wells used his boxing to neutralize Orolbai’s wrestling and found plenty of success. The 39-year-old American tagged his opponent multiple times on the feet before ultimately catching Orolbai with a well-timed shot in the third round. Wells then locked in a rare ninja choke to finish the fight at the 1:24 mark of the final round.

The result was clearly not what the Philadelphia crowd had hoped for. Shortly afterward, social media reports suggested that one of Orolbai’s supporters got into a confrontation with a suited spectator inside the arena, creating a brief moment of unrest among the crowd.

“Orolbai fans get into it with someone who I can only assume is the mayor of Philadelphia,” The Mac Life’s Oscar Willis shared on X.

The accompanying clip showed a man screaming at a group of men seated above him. The shouting contest between the two reaches a point where the one seated above throws something directly at the man below. However, he misses him slightly before the clip cuts off.

At this stage, the identities of the two involved and the precise reason for their confrontation remain unclear. However, the timing of the incident, which came shortly after the fan favorite’s loss, naturally led to speculation that emotions surrounding the result may have contributed to the tussle in the stands.

UFC events have produced similar scenes in the past, particularly when popular fighters suffer unexpected defeats.

Most notably, following Khabib Nurmagomedov’s submission victory over Conor McGregor, the two camps engaged in an altercation both inside the cage and in the stands. The intensity spilled outside afterward, as members of their fan bases reportedly became involved in a melee that resulted in several fans being knocked unconscious near the T-Mobile Arena’s food court.

Another memorable instance came at UFC 302, where two spectators got into a physical altercation in the upper rows of the Prudential Center in Newark. Interestingly, Islam Makhachev also headlined that event against Dustin Poirier, just as he did tonight against Ian Garry.

Last but not least, UFC 304 saw another such moment after Leon Edwards lost his welterweight title to Belal Muhammad in front of his home crowd in Manchester, with multiple videos showing spectators throwing chairs and getting into fights.

While the circumstances surrounding the UFC 330 incident remain unclear, the reported confrontation added an unexpected layer of drama to an already surprising night in Philadelphia. More importantly, Orolbai’s loss represents a significant setback for one of the welterweight division’s rising contenders.

What’s next for Myktybek Orolbai after UFC 330 loss? His path to the top 15

The 28-year-old definitely built up a substantial amount of hype after defeating recognizable fighters like Jack Hermansson and Chris Curtis. But it’s not hard to admit that Jeremiah Wells somewhat derailed Orolbai’s hype train at UFC 330. Still, that doesn’t mean he will have to climb the ladder all over again before getting closer to a top-15 ranked fighter.

For his next fight, Orolbai could definitely target Ramiz Brahimaj, who could prove to be a very good rebound clash for him. Brahimaj is currently on a two-fight losing streak, dropping his last two against Punahele Soriano and Neil Magny. After that, he could face welterweight veteran Randy Brown, which would also be a stellar opponent for him. If Orolbai successfully manages to defeat them, he could find himself facing someone from the rankings soon.

But that would be the UFC 330 loser’s path toward the top 15, and it’s a pretty competitive one. The winner, Jeremiah Wells, could definitely land a fight against someone from the rankings next. Or, he could even take Daniel Rodriguez’s spot in the top 15 by challenging him next, following Rodriguez’s recent loss to Uros Medic at UFC Belgrade. However, it will be interesting to see what the promotion has in store for Wells after his stellar victory in Philadelphia.

However, the UFC will surely be hoping that no similar atmosphere of unrest unfolds the next time Myktybek Orolbai or Jeremiah Wells steps inside the cage.

The UFC’s new broadcasting era with Paramount+ has hit another big stumbling block, with fans claiming widespread streaming issues at UFC 330. And to be honest, the timing couldn’t have been worse for Paramount.

UFC 330 is one of the year’s biggest cards and definitely not an experience fans wanted to be ruined after the company took over the UFC’s U.S. broadcasting rights in a landmark seven-year, $7.7 billion deal.

Although fans inside the arena seamlessly enjoyed the action, several viewers at home were stuck staring at error messages and buffering screens.

The problems also come during a crucial period for Paramount’s relationship with the UFC. The new UFC-Paramount collaboration, which began with UFC 324 in January, ended the previous pay-per-view model for UFC events in the United States.

Instead of spending around $80 for each numbered event, fans can now watch UFC Fight Night and pay-per-view cards with their Paramount+ membership.

The subscription costs approximately $8.99 per month for the ad-supported tier and $13.99 for the ad-free tier, making the new model substantially more affordable for regular UFC viewers. However, it appears that the transition has not been without problems.

When the Paramount+ era began at UFC 324, fans instantly attacked the coverage for cutting away from fighter walkouts and inserting advertisements between rounds and throughout the event.

The advertising complaints continued throughout subsequent UFC cards, with some fans claiming that the absence of pay-per-view has resulted in a more obtrusive viewing experience. Dana White, however, addressed the criticism surrounding the influx of advertising during the live broadcasts.

“I haven’t seen it yet,” he told the media. “And all this is a work in progress.

“It’s $8.99. You’re not paying, you know, however much anymore. These guys have to make some money, too. So yeah.”

To be fair, Paramount later made changes in response to the outrage, including restoring full fighter walkouts and limiting the amount of advertising that interfered with the live broadcast.

These modifications appeared to improve the platform’s relationship with UFC fans, particularly because viewers could now watch every UFC event with a single monthly subscription rather than purchasing separate pay-per-views.

But technical problems create a much bigger issue. When a stream constantly buffers or displays an error message, fans aren’t just dissatisfied with how the broadcast is presented. They are unable to watch the entire event altogether.

And to make optics worse, UFC 329, which featured Conor McGregor‘s much-anticipated homecoming, also received concerns about streaming issues shortly after it began.

Now with UFC 330 featuring Islam Makhachev‘s first UFC welterweight title defense against Ian Machado Garry in the main event, it is no surprise that fans were up in arms against UFC and Paramount for ruining their watching experience.

Fans turn on Paramount+ over UFC 330 streaming issues

As expected, many took to social media to complain that the Paramount+ stream was down, and they surely were anything but soft.

“@paramount Why can’t I watch UFC? All it does is buffer and then say error. My internet is hardwired. This is bull—-,” one viewer wrote on X.

Another fan specifically reported having problems while watching on a PS5, saying, “@paramountplus @ufc I’m on my PS5 trying to stream UFC but I am getting an ‘Error: Something went wrong. Please try again later’ message.’ I’ve tried redownloading Paramount+ but getting the same message. Please look into this and fix!”

The frustration quickly escalated, with another subscriber threatening to cancel the service: “@paramountplus get your s— together, I’m about to cancel.”

Another viewer questioned whether the problem was isolated to PlayStation 5, writing, “Is it just PS5? Sound, but no picture, then error.”

This one fan went on an all out rant: “Paramount plus is easily the worst streaming service available. I was pissed when I found out they got ufc. I have the service but I still watch the ufc on my veesee box.”

More chimed in with comments such as “Alright Paramount+ f—— sucks man,” and “I would much rather pay for a ppv than ever use this horrible paramount app ever again.”

It’s unclear whether Paramount will officially address the reported streaming issues. For the time being, however, the criticisms have made the broadcaster almost as much of a talking point as the action inside the Octagon.
