According to the creator, if you bury six fossils behind a cliff on your island, no more fossils will spawn on your island until you dig them out first. Since you will bury six fossils on the corner of your island, you don’t have to worry about the unnecessary space.

I just can’t resist saving them up and selling them. I may just have to try your tip, I don’t need the money or the fossils. Out of sight, out of mind! It just may work.”
