Amid Reserve Driver Dilemma, F1 Broadcaster Deal on the Cards for Daniel Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo is arguably the poster boy for promising F1 careers that never really reached their full potential. However, now that his Formula 1 career may be coming to an untimely and forced end, he finds himself with an opportunity that might allow him to carve out a niche for himself in the sport after all.

After being ousted by McLaren, the Honey Badger had a multitude of racing options at his disposal. Unfortunately, none of them materialized. Now, as the season comes to an end, and the 2023 driver line-ups are being finalized, it would appear that we might not see Ricciardo on the grid next year, or will we?

“I was a racer – I had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the commentary box” is what Martin Brundle said about his start into Grand Prix commentary. And the rest, as we say, is history. Daniel Ricciardo finds himself at a similar crossroads.

According to reporter for Sports Business Journal, Adam Stern, “@ESPN is not holding talks with @DanielRicciardo yet about possibly bringing him on board as a broadcaster for next year.”. However, “@BurkeMagnus says that if Ricciardo is interested, “he’s certainly got the personality for our line of work.””

Even though a role as a broadcaster is on the table for the Honey Badger, he is still determined to make it work as a Formula 1 driver. Sky Sports pundit, Ted Kravitz seems to have an inside line on the whole Ricciardo reserve driver saga.

The demise of Ricciardo’s career arguably began in 2018. He took a leap of faith by ditching Red Bull for Renault. Some would say that it worked out in its own way. However, one cannot turn a blind eye to how disastrous his racing career became once he switched to McLaren.

But as it turns out, the prodigal son may have returned after all. During the Qualifying session of the US Grand Prix in Austin, Ted Kravitz had some important piece of news for Daniel Ricciardo fans.

“He told us on Thursday, he will be around about the F1 paddock next year.”

Kravitz then went on to send shivers down the spines of F1 fans around the globe. He said, “I’m told it’s not Mercedes. So that only leaves Red Bull, the (only two) teams who have a reserve driver on hand at every race.”
