Terms like “legend” and “the greatest driver of all time” are tags that are not easily achievable in a cutthroat sport like NASCAR. Only a select few earn them and are able to make the cut for greatness. To achieve these feats without having won the Cup Series just shows how good Mark Martin was; how good and how unlucky.

Oftentimes, people refer to Mark Martin as the greatest driver to have never won the Cup Series. For context, in its 74 years of history, only 35 drivers got their hands on the Championship trophy. By extension, that means thousands didn’t.

But Martin’s inability to get his hands on that beautiful piece of silverware didn’t stop people from noticing how good he was. 2017 class Hall of Fame inductee, Martin raced for teams like Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing.

His stats from his 31-year career are amazing. The Arkansas driver won 40 Cup Series races and 96 in total across the three NASCAR Series. His 56 poles, 61 second-place finishes, and 882 starts, however, were never enough to get him to that ever-elusive trophy.

That doesn’t mean he didn’t come close. Martin finished in second place a total of five times, losing out to names such as Dale Earnhardt (1990 and 1994), Jeff Gordon (1998), Tony Stewart (2002), and Jimmie Johnson (2009).

Unfortunately for him, it never clicked for him at the right moments. It would be hard to argue that luck, or the lack thereof, played some part in the legend, never making it to the top rung of the podium.

Mark Martin displays his firm belief in stoicism

It’s easy to get lost in regrets about what could have happened; especially for someone who was as good as him but didn’t receive his dues. But the legend believes in something else.

Fans were amazed to see the maturity he had in his career and applauded the same.

Definitely a hero to most; it would be hard to argue a case otherwise against a personality like his.
