The New Orleans Pelicans‘ clash against the Minnesota Timberwolves had heightened expectations for one reason. They are two of the three teams that recently managed to restrict the defending champs, the Denver Nuggets. Moreover, the Wolves stepped into the season with hype surrounding the 22-year-old star Anthony Edwards, but it was Karl-Anthony Town, who stole the show during the Saturday night clash. The Wolves came out in flying colors, beating the Zion Williamson-less Pelicans in a 120-121 loss.

The game went down the live wire and Town’s crunch time explosion saved the Wolves a famous win. Let’s find out the key takeaways from the Saturday night clash.

Zion Williamson missed out on the Saturday night clash because of personal reasons. However, it didn’t restrict the Pelicans team from carrying forward their Nuggets’ domination into the next game. Brandon Ingram led the team’s offense, dropping 30 points with 7 assists. Nevertheless, it wasn’t enough to succeed in Karl-Anthony Towns’ clutch game at the end.

The Orleans side suffered a lot in the last season, as they missed out on the big man. Fortunately, Zion brought in an extra zeal, coming into the 2023-24 season, which serves to be working well for them.

2. Wolves see playoffs light

After the dramatic win against the Pelicans, the Wolves stand at the top of the Western Conference points table with a 9-3 record. In the last season, the team fell short in the first round against the Nuggets.

In this season, the Minnesota team seemed to have an upper hand at the title, considering the underwhelming performances of the Phoenix Suns, LA Lakers, and Golden State Warriors.

3. Towns and Rudy Gobert finally work in tandem

Stepping into the new season, pundits and fans threw a lot of opinions on Karl-Anthony Towns regarding his role and place on the Wolves side. Especially after the growth of Anthony Edwards in recent times. Earlier narratives on the Wolves said that the team was entirely built and centered on KAT, but there seems to be a change. The recent narratives went to an extreme extent where some pundits predicted trades for Towns. However, the 28-year-old star rewrote the narrative with his explosive best on Saturday. He dropped 29 points in his 33-minute game time with 6 rebounds and 9 assists.

More importantly, he also faced criticism for not working in tandem with his 7 ‘1 tall teammate, Rudy Gobert. However, it turned out well for the Wolves.

Towns further breaks the narratives

The growing narratives about Anthony Edwards replacing Towns as the franchise leaders have blown out of proportion. KAT cleared the air with his words after the Saturday encounter. While speaking in the post-game interview, Ant Man came down for a handshake with Towns. After giving him a cheerful handshake, he turned back to the camera and said, “Mama there goes that man!”
