‘He Is a Pro’: Nike Designer Elaborates on LeBron James’ Input to His Signature Shoe Line

Alongside Michael Jordan, LeBron James has had a substantial impact on sneaker culture with his signature Nike shoe line. LeBron James’ basketball achievements have guided his success in several other endeavors, one of which includes his Nike shoe collection. Amazingly enough, his journey with Nike began with a massive $90 million contract even before he had played a single NBA game.

The Los Angeles Lakers star has worked with many designers at Nike to produce his signature shoes. But Jason Petrie is the one who stands out as he has worked with LeBron for over ten years. Jason Petrie is a senior footwear designer at Nike Basketball and took over as head of ‘Team LeBron’ after succeeding designer Ken Link.

Jason Petrie remarked on LeBron James’ contribution to designing his own shoe line, in an interview to ‘The Undefeated’. Petrie said, “He is a great partner and at this point, he is like a core designer. The acumen has gone up and up every year.”

“He is by far the best athlete I have ever had the opportunity to work with; as far as like going back and forth and being able to just send something or send a little text or, like you know, show a drawing or show a rough sample. You know, like he is a pro at that at this stage.”

LeBron and Nike’s partnership has blossomed as the shoe line is one of the most recognized brands throughout the world. In 2016, LeBron signed up for a “lifetime” contract with Nike, rumored to be worth more than a billion dollars. LeBron’s performances on the basketball court seem to fuel his ambitions off the court, strengthening a brand that could rival many other sports persons’ brands.

LeBron James and the Lakers’ woes continue

On a rather harrowing note, the Los Angeles Lakers continued their awful start to the season as they lost to the Phoenix Suns. This comes straight after their opening night loss to the Golden State Warriors, losing 114-121. The Phoenix Suns dominated the game at one point, leading by 32 points in the second quarter.

LeBron James himself experienced a tough game before halftime with three fouls called against him. However, the fight between Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard on the sidelines dominated the headlines. It was a day to forget for the Lakers as they converted just 39.3% of their attempts made. The Lakers face the Memphis Grizzlies next, with a plan to bounce back from the two home losses.
