This news is bound to make Patrick Mahomes and Co. happy. One of their own, signed with another team, has returned to their fold. And they did not even have to wait for the entire season. Just two months into the 2023 season, the Jets returned a wide receiver they had signed from the Kansas City Chiefs just last year. What does this mean for the Chiefs and their prospects in the current season?

The deadline for making trades is fast approaching, and teams are scurrying to trade players and pick chances in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Chiefs weren’t the only team that made trades recently. In fact, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed cornerback Darius Rush from the Chiefs and released their own cornerback, Desmond King. The Atlanta Falcons, on the other hand, waived DB Jaylinn Hawkins.

The new WR may revive the Chiefs’ offense

This season, the Chiefs offense does not look like the team that won 2 Super Bowl Championships. The Chiefs urgently needed a playmaker who could help out the Mahomes-Kelce duo. On the depth chart, they already had names like Kadarius Toney, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and Skyy Moore, but they failed to shine through. Among the three, they have recorded just 2 TDs, 35 catches, and 353  yards. The recent trade comes as a relief to the offensively challenged Chiefs.

Mecole Hardman was picked up by the Jets from the Chiefs for a contract worth $4 million. But after the Jets signed him up, he remained underutilized, languishing on the sidelines. The Jets also traded their seventh-round pick for the Chiefs’ sixth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The WR had played only 28 offensive snaps and had only one reception in five games. But now back with the Chiefs, he is expected to be engaged more.

Patrick Mahomes disappointed with points despite 5-1 record

Ahead of the match against the Los Angeles Chargers, Mahomes, in a media interaction, spoke regarding their performance so far. While the Chiefs have only lost one game so far and are 5-1, Mahomes was unhappy. He was disappointed with the points that they had scored in each match. In most of the victories, the Chiefs had failed to score a blowout win, except against the Bears, where they won by a margin of 31 points. The Chiefs are looking to change that.

While their defense has been performing uncharacteristically well, the offense has been lacking. With the latest addition, the Chiefs want to reconstitute their team to the one that had won the Super Bowl last year. And Mecole Hardman was part of that team. Hardman was picked by Kansas City as their second-round pick. 2021 saw him collecting 693 yards and 59 catches. After that, his stats went for a toss as he skipped eight games because of multiple injuries. Chiefs are hopeful that all that will change now.
