The Carolina Panthers has acquired two quarterbacks in the past two offseasons. While both of the players joined the team hoping to be the next face of the franchise, things have not quite turned out as planned. The Panthers are currently 2-6 in the season after 8 weeks. Baker Mayfield, former first overall pick in the NFL, will now be a backup quarterback for the foreseeable future since the introduction of PJ Walker into the team. While some Panthers fans saw it coming for a long time, many NFL viewers are stunned by the bold call.

After parting ways with Matt Rhule, the Panthers appointed Steve Wilks as the interim head coach. Besides, fighting an excruciating start to the season, Wilks was without Baker to begin his reign in Carolina. However, backup, PJ Walker, stepped up big time for the coach and earned him an unexpected win against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. He even looked good against the Falcons this Sunday. As a result of this, the Panthers have officially benched Mayfield, who is now the second-string quarterback.

Yet now, he is a backup option in a team which is staring at the face of a rebuild.

In spite of the shock, this Tennessee Titans fan is thinking about the long game. He predicted that the former first 1st pick to be the future Colts QB. Another franchise which has been disastrous in managing their quarterbacks.

An economic disaster as well?

As Baker’s stock as an NFL calibre QB plunges down, this will also hurt him financially. After his trade to the Panthers, they also restructured his contract in a way which awarded him for his performances. If he plays 75% of the snaps for the Panthers, with higher league standing would pocket extra money. So, him missing all these games would really translate into a poor fiscal year as well.

But this does not mark the end of the player’s tenure with Carolina. He is yet to play for the new head coach. And the call could come sooner than later, with much harder defenses lined up against them in the coming weeks. Wilks might look to capitalize on the 27-year-old’s experience over PJ Walker.
