Retirements are usually a big thing when it comes to the NFL, especially if it’s a player who has made a mark with a team. So naturally, this should have been the case with former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles. Instead, he slipped quietly into retirement. And after a few days of retirement, he’s already making big plans for his future. And some words for his critics, it seems.

Appearing on the ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast for an exclusive interview, Bortles talks about his time with the Jaguars, and about the reasons for retiring after 8 years. When the host Big Cat asks him if he has any idea of his career earnings, he seems unsure. But when Cat reveals the figure, it seems to light up Bortles’ face, and when Cat comments, “That’s pretty f*cking sweet!”, he says, “That’s right, s*ck it, nerds!”

‘Nerds’ here most probably is a reference to the numerous critics he had back during his time with the Jaguars. And he faced a lot of criticism for her performance, even when he led the Jaguars to their first-ever AFC Championship game (since 1999) in 2017. His 5 years at Jacksonville saw him complete 1,561/2,632 for 17,646 and 103 touchdowns, with 75 interceptions in 75 games.

Former Jaguars’ QB Blake Bortles announces retirement on a podcast

Bortles was a first-round, 3rd overall pick by the Jaguars, who signed him for 4 years. His next 3 years saw him complete short stints with the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Broncos, Green Bay Packers, and the New Orleans Saints, before finally retiring earlier this month.

Talking about what he wants to do now since he’s retired, Bortles jokes, “I don’t know… I made a LinkedIn page so we’ll see if I can get some hits. But I think my lack of work history might be slowing that down.” Later on, he adds, “You can start the senior tour at 50, so I’ve essentially got 20 years to get ready for that.”

On top of that, in a Tweet announcing his retirement, he also mentioned his future goal is to make it to the US Equestrian team for the 2024 Olympics. It looks like a busy retirement plan for Bortles already.

The Jaguars face the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday, in an effort to recreate the humiliating defeat they meted out to the Colts in an earlier encounter this season. With the Colts making changes to their QB lineup, will it be enough to stop the Jaguars from running riot?
