Injuries often are the nemesis of a game, and more importantly, the career of an athlete. It is not rare that we see exceptional players’ careers flash before their eyes due to an injury, a recent instance being the Niners QB Brock Purdy’s ankle injury. The quarterback sprained his left ankle during the team’s Week 6 clash against the Browns. Reportedly, the injury was caused due to the hip-drop tackle that the Browns’ defensive end Myles Garrett used.

Following this, Purdy’s status is questionable for the 5-1 Niners’ week 7 clash against the Colts. However, Purdy has not been the only victim of the infamous ‘hip-drop’ tackle this season. And surely, he won’t be the last if the seemingly dangerous tackle continues to be used. Due to this, the NFL authorities are re-contemplating their decisions.

Along with Brock Purdy, the Seahawks QB Geno Smith suffered a major knee injury in week 4 against the Giants, again, owing to the ‘hip-drop’ tackle. The QB had to leave mid-game and his status remains questionable. These instances are just to name a few. Last season, Cowboys‘ running back Tony fractured his fibula in playoffs, even the Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes was not spared. Looking at the increased risk, which is a humongous 25 times more than a standard tackle, NFL authorities are considering banning the tackle altogether, as per NFL executive Jeff Miller.

Additionally, the CEO of the Atlanta Falcons and Competition Committee Chairman, Rick McKay, asserted the view. “When they do it, the runner becomes defenseless. They can’t kick their way out from under. And that’s the problem. That’s where the injury occurs. You see, the ankle get trapped underneath the weight of the defender.” Although, this will not be the first time the NFL will be banning such controversial moves.

NFL authorities on other controversial moves

In the ‘hip-drop’ tackle, the defense player wraps the ball carrier from behind and then swings his weight and falls on the ball carrier’s leg. This, as said by McKay, traps the ankle underneath the defender. In the past as well, NFL authorities banned the ‘horse collar’ tackle in the 2005 off-season, which was similar to the ‘hip-drop’.

Additionally, NFL authorities are weighing out the options for controversial moves like the Eagles‘ signature ‘tush-push’. They are also looking into the turf-grass debates on the NFL grounds. However, it seems unlikely that the organization will arrive at a conclusion for these issues in the near future, but the fans can expect some major news regarding bidding adieu to the ‘hip-drop’.
