Gone are the days when only entrepreneurs owned soccer clubs. Following Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s investment in Wrexham, there is a surge of interest in creating personal soccer narratives. Actor Matthew McConaughey invested in Austin FC, while Natalie Portman owns Angel City FC, a team that plays in the NWSL. Now, it seems there is a new investor in town. The retired NFL star, Tom Brady, entered the soccer ownership playing field and became the minority owner of, Championship side, Birmingham City.

Yet, some USMNT legends believe he cannot create the same ripples as Reynolds did with Wrexham. Jimmy Conrad, Charlie Davies, and Heath Pearce recently discussed the impact of Brady’s investment.

In the recent episode of the In Soccer We Trust: A US Soccer podcast show, Pearce explained, “Kevin Durant’s done nothing with Philadelphia Union, right? We have seen outgoing ones like LeBron James with the ownership group. He’s outward facing, Right? Tom Brady’s a very private guy. It’s not like he’s, you know, like Ryan Reynolds, you know, in terms of entertainment.” Kevin Durant invested in NWSL’s Gotham FC but remains a silent partner with the team. Unlike Reynolds, the 2x NBA champion prefers a private life and shies away from the cameras.

Meanwhile, LeBron James has a successful relationship with Liverpool after becoming the minority owner of the team. Fans often see him donning the Liverpool jersey but he never comes forward to handle club matters. Pearce believes Brady rows in the same boat with the involvement within the club. The legendary quarterback will become the chairman of the advisory board at the club. But Pearce, nevertheless, has doubts regarding the ownership’s success.

He continued, “Do you think this gives a big enough boot? Do you think it’s a big boost? He’s proven on the field as an athlete and what he does. But he’s not exactly like the personality type that’s gonna drive eyeballs because he’s going to be out waving the flag.” On the other hand, Charlie Brown discussed how it would be the onset of something exciting to come.

Brown stated, “I mean it’s up to him because this is a new chapter for him in his life, post- playing career.” People change from time to time, but suddenly, they get invested in something they want to work dealy. Although an NFL player, Brady is a top athlete who could have expertise in athletes and the way they work on the field.

As for Wrexham, they will play in the EFL League Two following their promotion. With Birmingham City in the EFL Championship, Brady and Co would look for their club to get promoted to the English Premier League. They have a factory of talent coming out through the youth academy, with Jude Bellingham, the latest Real Madrid star, being the prime example. Do you think Tom Brady can do a Reynolds?
