One of the best fighters in the UFC, and all of mixed martial arts history, Jon Jones, will finally make his return to the octagon in March 2023. In a recent press conference, UFC President Dana White announced Jones would end his three-year hiatus and return to action in his heavyweight debut at UFC 285 on March 5. The news was certainly a treat to the fans and is still very much the talk of the town. However, the announcement came with its fair share of controversy as former heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou left the UFC after relinquishing his title. While the debates about a hypothetical Jones vs. Ngannou fight are raging among fans, there is another age-old debate happening in the background.

In any sport, there’s almost always a G.O.A.T. debate. Rarely do we see fans of a sport unanimously agree on a ‘Greatest of All Time’ athlete. Such is the case in MMA as well. Jon Jones, who many consider the G.O.A.T., is a leading candidate in the debate. Now, ahead of his heavyweight debut, the former champion has chimed in on the G.O.A.T. talk.

Jon Jones leads the MMA GOAT list among fans with other MMA greats like Khabib Nurmagomedov, Georges St-Pierre, and Anderson Silva. The 35-year-old has never shied away from voicing his opinion that he considers himself to be the top dog. Now, two months away from arguably the biggest fight of his career so far, ‘Bones’ is not too concerned with the debate.

During a recent interview, the Albuquerque native spoke about the debate and how it does not bother him anymore. He said, “I’m very aware of the G.O.A.T. argument, where I stand, and I honestly feel in my heart that it’s not much of an argument…”

The former UFC light heavyweight champion said his performances in the cage have already sealed the debate. “… I do believe that argument is over. And so I don’t really hold a lot of pressure on myself to prove that I’m the best.”

However, Jones added what would end it once and for all. He said, “I’m also aware that another win would definitely put a cherry on top of an argument that is already over.”

At UFC 285, Jones will be fighting Ciryl Gane for the vacant heavyweight title. Therefore, a win would put him on the list of elite fighters who held titles in two different weight classes.
