It has been quite some time since we’ve last had the electrifying presence of ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor inside the UFC octagon. He fractured his leg in the main event of UFC 264 against bitter rival, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier, in their third fight. Thus, leaving the 35-year-old frustrated and out of action for over two years. However, rumors suggest that the Irishman is looking to make a return against a top UFC contender in 2024.

McGregor is eyeing a return inside the octagon on April 13th at the biggest UFC event of the decade, against Michael Chandler, who is currently ranked 5th in the UFC lightweight division. The two were coaches in The Ultimate Fighter season 31. The former UFC double champ claimed that he expects a shot at the lightweight strap if he wins his return fight. However, UFC commentator Joe Rogan advises against the decision.

In podcast episode #2073 of the JRE with Derek, the podcast host covered the Irishman’s return inside the octagon. Rogan stated, “If you were a coach and you wanted to look at this in terms of a long-term career strategy, I would want to tune up fight 100% I would not want him going right in there against Islam Machachev.” Rogan believes it would be ill-advised if McGregor takes on the UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev without getting his footing back inside the Octagon.

Rogan highlighted Conor McGregor’s admitting to struggling inside the octagon in his fight against Dustin Poirier in their second outing, due to having a long layoff. The JRE host went on to say, “You need to be active to be at the highest levels of world-class mixed martial arts competition. I just don’t see how you can take two years off, multiple surgeries, get on juice, get off juice, and then jump in there against the best in the world.”

“Maybe he can do it, but if I was his coach, and the option was available, I’d say let’s get someone who’s not even in the top 15 Let’s get some guy who is beatable, but a good test…. Get your timing back. Have that fight six months later. You have a big fight,” said Rogan.

Despite Conor McGregor being restless for a return inside the octagon, the head honcho of the UFC is still yet to announce a return date for the Irishman. However, UFC CEO, Dana White, did reveal something interesting recently.
