Factions are one of the coolest things about pro wrestling. With fighters teaming up together to achieve a common goal, or at times just to create chaos, these groups have the ability to drive major storylines. WWE has been really lucky to have some of the most legendary factions in history, with the likes of The Four Horsemen, D-Generation X, The New World Order (nWo), and The Shield making their mark in the promotion.

And WWE’s top draw, CM Punk, is not new to factions. In fact, he was the one who came up with the idea of The Shield, thus gifting fans with talents such as Roman Reigns, Jon Moxley, and Seth Rollins. But now it seems like he is interested in joining another WWE faction.

Damage CTRL is one of the top factions in the WWE right now. Ever since their debut in the 2022 edition of SummerSlam, the faction featuring Bayley, Dakota Kai, Iyo Sky, Kairi Sane, and Asuka has been wreaking havoc as a heel stable. In a recent picture uploaded by Bayley on her Instagram account, she could be seen posing with other members of Damage CTRL with the caption, “They said we won’t. I bet we will. #DamageCTRL”.

The picture sure caught the attention of a lot of fans. They flooded it with likes, but one fan stood out in particular. It was none other than CM Punk. In the comments section of the post, CM Punk expressed his interest in being a part of the stable, as he wrote, “I sent in my application to join but haven’t heard anything yet.” Well, Bayley, the leader of the Damage CTRL, should surely consider his application. ‘The Cult of Personality’ has a lot of experience with factions, as he had been a part of four factions in the past.

The 45-year-old was a part of The Second City Saints, a faction that CM Punk formed with Colt Cabana, Ace Steele, and their valet, Lucy Furr. He was also a member of The New Breed, a faction featuring CM Punk, Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von, Kevin Thorn, and Matt Striker. The ever-famous Straight Edge Society was also led by CM Punk and featured the likes of Luke Gallows, Serena, and Joey Mercury.

And the final faction, ‘The New Nexus’, was one of the biggest prospects in the company. Punk overtook the stable after Wade Barett’s departure before it came to an abrupt end, never meeting its potential. With a resume this impressive, CM Punk and that brilliant mind of his can surely help Damage CTRL rule the WWE roster with the amount of potential they have. Unlike what happened with The Nexus.

The top faction that wasn’t

On June 7th, 2010, eight rookies from season 1 of NXT decided to hijack RAW. They attacked other wrestlers, broke the entire ring, and made sure everyone was aware of the fact that these rookies were here to stay and dominate. And ladies and gentlemen, that’s how The Nexus was born.

The Wade Barrett-led faction had one focus in mind: to be taken seriously. And they surely were, as they targeted the top face of the company, John Cena. The Nexus ended up creating champions. Barrett held the Intercontinental gold thrice, while the tag team of Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel became the tag champions. Along the way, they even made John Cena a member of their faction temporarily after losing a Hell in a Cell match. However, like all good things, the faction too came to an end. And an unfortunate one.

The original Nexus, which was led by Barrett, was buried by the creative decisions of the WWE, as well as some backstage strings pulled by John Cena. At the 2010 SummerSlam PPV, Nexus faced off against the then-Super Cena in a 12-man tag match. As per the original plans, the faction was supposed to win the match. However, Cena ordered a change in the ending, and he won instead.

This move is termed by many as the moment that killed the Nexus hype. Wade Barrett was forced to leave the faction. Punk took over and formed The New Nexus. But even he couldn’t save the sinking ship. And thus died the stable that could’ve been what the Shield and other legendary factions became.
