Alonso replied, “I don’t know, time will tell us. When he will have a car like others, if he wins, he will be one of the legends of Formula 1.”

“When one day he has a car like the others, and he is 4th, 5th, 7th, these four titles will be bad news for him, because people will take these four titles even in a worse than what they are doing now so there are interesting times coming.”

Alonso was accurate on how different you are treated by fans when you are on top, compared to when you are not. While Sebastian has failed to win any title since then, people’s reactions certainly have changed.

How Sebastian Vettel’s career panned out post 2013 title win

The Mercedes era of dominance started in 2014. It also ended Sebastian’s championship winning streak. He could only manage a 5th position in 2014, with his teammate Daniel Ricciardo finishing 3rd. In 2015, he made a switch to Ferrari and performed better than his teammate Kimi Raikkonen, finishing 3rd.

It was 2017 when he emerged as a serious title-race contender, finishing 2nd. In 2018 again, he gave Lewis Hamilton a run for his money but finished behind the Briton.

It was the turn of the decade in 2020 when he struggled for pace in Ferrari and finished 13th, 5 positions behind his young counterpart, Charles Leclerc.

In 2021, he switched to Aston Martin, finishing 12th with 43 points. Currently, he is languishing in 13th position again in a car that has seen 3 DNFs.
