In recent months, Red Bull and McLaren have been butting heads quite often, and not just on the track. It all began when McLaren’s upgrades proved to the grid that Lando Norris is a world championship-winning driver and Red Bull set their sights on the Brit. McLaren boss Zak Brown wasn’t too happy about this scenario, with rumors of Norris ending his contract early swirling around. The annoyance has perhaps translated into Brown publicly opposing Red Bull’s added involvement with AlphaTauri. Now, these objections from Brown are being backed by an ex-Ferrari boss.

Antonio Ghini, the director of communications and brand management for Ferrari, sat down with Motorsport to discuss various aspects of Formula 1. In his conversation, he was asked about the recent news of AlphaTauri moving its aerodynamics operations to Red Bull’s Milton Keynes factory. Ghini spoke for everyone when he highlighted how Red Bull can use its sister team to their advantage while making them better in 2024.

He said, “Have eh a Red Bull who has control of two and who can use maybe the team junior to carry out tests that are not directly functional in the search for performance. But which will still bring a great system advantage. Well, I think that will trigger very, very harsh reactions for the umpteenth time. It will be the FIA who takes the blame. This one is the worst. Here I have to say we defined Red Bull as sneaky. In this case, it seems almost reckless because it is evident it was evident that such a move would have unleashed the world. Surely they already have in mind how to behave, how to react, but if it comes out like when we had the pink Mercedes every race. Well, I think it’s one a strategy. Well, if the name escaped him, there is a strategy.” (Translated via Google)

Despite the difficult comprehension, one can tell he’s pointing out how AlphaTauri will just be another Red Bull in different colors, similar to how we had the Pink Mercedes by Racing Point and even Green Red Bull by Aston Martin recently.

This scenario will surely unleash a lot of public backlash and the FIA will be blamed for allowing this scenario to pass if we see major repercussions in the 2024 season. However, if Red Bull can get away with it, it will be a masterstroke. This is exactly what McLaren boss Zak Brown’s criticism was as well.

Zak Brown communicated his concerns about the Red Bull-AlphaTauri connection

Every team on the grid should be concerned about Red Bull’s sister team moving in with them in Milton Keynes. This essentially allows Red Bull to test out their parts and upgrades on AlphaTauri before putting them on the Red Bull challenger. A loophole that will not only guarantee better performance but also help with the budget cap.

This, along with the fairness of the sport, was exactly the concern of the McLaren CEO.

Brown said, “This A/B team and co-ownership, which is a whole other level of A/B team, is of big concern to us and the health of the sport and the fairness of the sport. The thing I would like to see us as a sport focus on, and where we sit on the regulation side, is the A/B team co-ownership. I believe it’s a serious issue for the fairness of the sport, for the fans. That’s why it’s pretty much not allowed in any other form of major sport.”
