In a crucial moment during the Truck Series championship race at Phoenix Raceway, young talent Carson Hocevar inadvertently spun fellow contender Corey Heim. The incident ended up significantly impacting Heim’s title chances. Hocevar, who is set to make his debut in the NASCAR Cup Series next year, expressed regret for his reputation for on-track incidents. However, Dale Earnhardt Jr believes that Hocevar’s reaction after causing the incident might not have been genuine.

Carson Hocevar’s unintentional spin of Corey Heim in the championship-deciding race left Heim’s title hopes in tatters. Heim, who was running in fifth place as the top-running title contender, found himself sent into a spin by contact from Hocevar on lap 119, causing significant damage to his truck.

The next incident happened between the two when Hocevar was trying to get past Heim with 3 laps away from the scheduled end of the race. The contact between Hocevar and Heim sent Hocevar into the wall, triggering the first of the four overtimes. After the race, Heim denied any retaliation. He simply explained that he had already suffered enough damage to the right rear. He said he was struggling to control his truck due to the loss of the side force.

Hocevar, who is set to race in the Cup Series next season for Spire Motorsports, expressed regret for his actions. He acknowledged that he had a reputation for being involved in on-track incidents. He was visibly dejected with his head down and a low voice as he spoke to the trackside reporters.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., known for his candid insights, didn’t mince words when discussing the incident. In a recent podcast episode, Earnhardt Jr. expressed his concern for Hocevar’s actions and their potential negative impact on the young driver’s future. He questioned the genuineness of Hocevar’s post-race reactions. He emphasized the need for personal growth, as repeated incidents of this nature could jeopardize his promising career.

Earnhardt Jr. stated, “It’s a bad look, you know, for the Truck series. How do you come back from that?” He questioned the authenticity of Hocevar’s response to the incident, pointing out the evident recklessness of his on-track actions. “This is the thing, man, alright, we’ll cut to the chase here. Carson has done this so many times, and he went into the corner, hit Heim, and went up the track further,” Earnhardt Jr. remarked. He was keen to highlight what he perceived as an act of avoidance by Hocevar, saying, “I am like, it’s indefensible, and him coming over the radio and going, ‘Walk me through what happened there.’ I am like, wait a minute, man, you know what you just did.

Earnhardt Jr. continued, expressing his concern that such behavior could undermine the promising career Hocevar has in front of him. “There’s something innate inside his mental approach to all of this that really, really needs some work,” he said. “And, if he continues this type of stuff, he’s going to ruin this incredible opportunity he has, because he is incredibly talented.

Dale Earnhardt Jr’s concerns regarding Carson Hocevar’s future in the Cup Series have also resonated throughout the racing community. Martin Truex Jr has also weighed in on the matter, shedding more light on the incident and the subsequent reactions.

Truex Jr., who races for Joe Gibbs Racing, was forthright in his disapproval of the events that happened during the Truck championship race. In a post-qualifying interview for the final Cup Series race, Truex Jr voiced his dissatisfaction, stating, “I was not impressed. That is not professional auto racing. It’s a joke. They need to fix it.”

The veteran racer expressed skepticism about Hocevar’s post-race remorse. He believed that Hocevar was playing to the sympathies of the racing community. “I think it’s an act. I think he was just acting out, trying to make people feel sorry for him, Truex Jr. said candidly.

Truex Jr. went on to call for a higher standard of racing, emphasizing the need for more strategic and respectful competition on the track. In his view, the incident involving Hocevar and Heim reflected a lack of professional conduct. He emphasized that in the heat of a championship battle, simply spinning out a competitor is not the way to go. He remarked, “For the most part, those guys raced like a bunch of kids that never had to pay for anything. Or fix anything that they ever drove in their entire life. And that’s not the way you’re supposed to drive as a professional.”

The apparent lack of consequences for such behavior also troubled Martin Truex Jr. He thinks it is “embarrassing for the sport.” His remarks further emphasized the need for a shift in NASCAR racing, promoting a sense of responsibility and sportsmanship among drivers.
