For those of us who are wallowing in the idea of never seeing Kevin Harvick race in the Cup Series again further disappointment follows. The freshly retired 47-year-old champion has thrown down the possibility of him getting behind a Cup car once again. Conversing with the legend on ‘Dale Jr Download’, Harvick disclosed his decisions as far as racing went and shut any remaining idea of him competing in the top level again.

His clarity to call it quits in the Cup Series comes from a rather disappointing self-awareness that he is not capable of competing at the highest level. Despite the words of disheartenment, he did still offer some glimmer of hope for his fans.

Kevin Harvick retired as an icon of worldwide racing after spending 23 illustrious years in the Cup Series. During this time, he raced for two of the biggest names in NASCAR: Richard Childress Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing. Along with his crew chief Rodney Childers, Harvick won the 2014 Cup Series championship and went on to become one of the most formidable forces on the grid. While his retirement at the end of the glorious run is as satisfying as a career can get, it certainly was a tear-inducing affair to watch him go through his final laps in the #4 car.

The heartbreak from his final race at Phoenix not fully healed yet, Harvick has cast fans into further darkness. Talking to Dale Earnhardt Jr on his podcast, he said, “I am not going to drive Cup ever again. I can’t be competitive. I cannot make myself go there and say, ‘I am looking for a top 30 today.’ Though not a lot of us would agree with Harvick about him not being competitive, he did have a slight loophole in the mix.

While the former champion was sure about the idea that he was not going to be seen in the Cup Series again, he was still open to other threads. Dale Jr asked, “Big question. Are you gonna drive anything next year?”, he responded, “I am not sure yet. The door’s open.” Continuing to reveal his plans for his racing team Kevin Harvick Incorporated he had a carefully laid out plan, but as for himself, he wasn’t sure where or how he wanted to race.

Talking about how KHI would function moving forward, Harvick made it clear that it would be run-of-the-mill. Hearing his uncertainty about a destination he could go to as a racer, Junior asked, “What piques your interest? I mean do you look at sports cars and go, ‘I’ve never done that’, or dirt racing?” Harvick affirmed that his racing again would only be at the grassroots level or someplace he found “fun”.

Not willing to let go of the high-caliber driver without a shot, Dale Jr asked him about the possibility of racing in the Truck Series or the Xfinity Series. He asked, “Maybe a Truck or an Xfinity car down the road? You had so much success you never looked as miserable in the Xfinity cars as you did in the Cup cars.” In response, Harvick admitted with a laugh that he himself had thought about it and would love Junior’s advice on the prospect. He said, “Yeah. I know. I think I think that’s something I have to lean on somebody like you to say, ‘Is that worth doing?’.”

Kevin Harvick being open to race again is certainly a bright outlook for fans. While it is already predecided that he will be serving Fox Sports as an analyst in 2024, there’s nothing to say that we won’t get to sporadically see him behind a car or truck in NASCAR again.
