The Miami Heat have turned quite a few heads this postseason after some stunning performances in the East. Jimmy Butler and the Heat managed to overpower Giannis Antetokounmpo and the first-seeded Milwaukee Bucks in 5 games in the first round. And now, they’re on the verge of eliminating the New York Knicks as well. Butler has stolen the show with his remarkable performances and earned plaudits for it. But when asked about the 33-year-old’s ‘killer’ playoffs run, one Rockets legend put Butler’s image in the league into perspective.

Jimmy Butler rose to stardom during his time with the Chicago Bulls. Since then, Butler has, however, bounced around from team to team till he found his home in Miami. But why did some parts of the fans and media consider him a ‘cancer’?

Co-host of Inside the NBA, Kenny ‘The Jet’ Smith recently made an appearance on The Dan LeBatard Show. That is where he talked about multiple things, including the amazing run the Heat have been on and the impact of Jimmy Butler. As the show went on, host Dan Le Batard asked Smith about Jimmy Butler’s transformation from being a “locker room cancer” to a “postseason killer“.

Smith started off by saying, “Oh, you’re talking about Michael Jordan’s son,” as he seemingly endorsed the infamous fan theory of Butler being the son of NBA icon Michael Jordan. He then said, “I think Jimmy is kind of like the yelling coach. When they’re winning, people go, ‘Oh, that’s a great intensity, the guy fires everyone up.’”

“But when they’re losing, all the team is tuning him out. ‘He’s a cancer’. That’s Jimmy Butler, he’s the yelling coach. So, his style of play is, either, when you’re winning, it’s going to get praised but when you’re losing, could be viewed as disruptive. So, he just found a group of guys that embraces that lack of disruption,” added the Houston Rockets legend.

Butler has been on a tear lately. Despite having to qualify for the postseason via the Play-In tournament, the Heat have built a legitimate case for winning it all. The six-time NBA All-Star has been instrumental in guiding his team to this stage. After making the Finals in 2020, Miami will be ecstatic to reach another one this year and this will cement Butler’s legacy as one of the best Playoffs performers in recent history.

During his time with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2018, Butler took on the Wolves’ starting five with a bunch of second and third-stringers in team practice and got the win over them as well. That turned out to be one of the most memorable moments in Butler’s career.

Unfortunately, Minnesota could not see his value, and he was eventually traded. But it is nice to see that Butler has finally found the right spot in Miami now. What are your thoughts on Jimmy Buckets? Let us know in the comments.
