Neymar is a name that needs no introduction. The Al Hilal star’s name in the realm of Brazilian soccer is quite synonymous. The NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, though, seems to have a different perspective. In a surprising turn of events, the power forward vocally snubbed Neymar, endorsing Vinicius Jr. as the ‘No. 1 Brazilian player in the world’. In addition to this audacious statement, Antetokounmpo made a distinct gesture by giving away a jersey and some sneakers to the Real Madrid star.

All this happened after Vinicius Jr. flew to New York’s Barclays Center to watch the emphatic clash between the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks. As the match ended, Giannis spotted Vini, who was sitting in the front row. The player approached the Real Madrid star and gave him his match-worn shoes by saying, “My brother, shoes.” Then the 29-year-old said, “One second, I give you the jersey. You get the whole package, my brother.” Giannis then removed his jersey and even signed it.

After handing him both the gifts, he said, “I appreciate you. Thank you for coming.” Additionally, the NBA star then heaped praise on Vinicius while hugging and clicking pictures, saying, “Number one Brazilian player in the world. Number one, right here.” Notably, Giannis shared this wholesome moment on Instagram and wrote, “My guy @vinijr,” in the caption. Furthermore, Vinicius also commented on the post, saying, “I appreciate you, bro!! MVP!!”

Vinicius’ company proved favorable, as he was not only awarded for his presence, but the winger also saw the Bucks clinch a 122-144 victory against the Nets. Nevertheless, this heartwarming exchange between Giannis and Vinicius focused the attention toward an absent Neymar. Ironically, the Greek Freak had earlier pledged his alliance to Neymar’s team.

Giannis Antetokounmpo previously declared support for Neymar and Co.

After Neymar inked a $434 million deal with Al Hilal, rumors circulated that the Saudi Arabian team extended a $1.1 billion offer to Kylian Mbappe. Hearing this, Giannis took a playful approach by posting a photo mimicking Mbappe, humorously stating, “Al Hilal you can take me. I look like Kylian Mbappe.” Although Mbappe turned down the offer, Al Hilal embraced the jest, jokingly recruiting Giannis instead.

One take at a time

I first kicked a soccer ball when I was 12. My early exposure to playing the sport earned me many accolades at the zonal and district levels. I still remember my first goal, where I scored a 90+5 minute header like Sergio Ramos did in the 2014 Champions League final against Atletico Madrid.
