Colby Covington is set to take on Leon Edwards at UFC 296 for the welterweight title. ‘Chaos’ has been out of competition since his win against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 last year. The two men were also involved in an altercation outside of the cage as a result of the friction between the pair. But in a recent interview, Covington revealed that he had another opponent in mind before the Masvidal incident forced him to take a break from the sport.

Covington revealed that he had been offered a chance to take on Khamzat Chimaev by the UFC. However, ‘Borz’s issues with making weight and his actions regarding the same have been cited by Covington as the reason why the matchup never materialized. The American also revealed why he believes Chimaev isn’t someone the UFC “can trust” in his honest take in the interview!

Colby Covington has been absent from the fighting scene for 18 months. In a recent interview with ESPN MMA, he expressed the difficulty of the hiatus. He confessed that he had aimed for a quick return after the fight with Jorge Masvidal in March but faced obstacles. The UFC considered setting up a fight with Khamzat Chimaev, but Covington criticized Chimaev as unprofessional and pointed to him being the reason why the bout fell through.

Covington stated, “They were looking to set up that fight with that mother**ker, Khamzat Chimaev, but he’s unprofessional, he’s you know, he’s a clown out there, laughing when he’s missing weight by 10 lbs, making a fool of this publicly traded beautiful company of the UFC”.

According to Covington, Chimaev’s behavior jeopardized the UFC pay-per-view main events. He also further criticized Chimaev for laughing off these incidents.

The UFC then allegedly offered Chimaev an easy fight against Nate Diaz, whom Covington described as a “soy boy” and washed up. Covington revealed, “The washed-up Nate Diaz that shouldn’t even be fighting anymore, the guy can’t even talk straight, he’s not even coherent anymore, they gave him the easiest fight to set up to get this big money fight with Colby “Chaos” Covington and he couldn’t pass the test, he was afraid, plain and simple…”

However, according to Covington, Chimaev then moved up to the middleweight division, avoiding a confrontation with him. In summary, Covington portrayed Chimaev as unprofessional, untrustworthy, and unwilling to face him in a high-profile matchup.

Despite the ‘Borz’ matchup not happening according to his wishes, Covington recently also revealed the list of opponents he wants to face next! And he made an interesting comment stating that one of the fighters on the list was responsible for his exit from his previous gym!

Covington claims Dustin Poirier responsible for his removal from old gym  

Colby Covington, set to challenge welterweight champion Leon Edwards, has already envisioned his post-title-fight plans. In an interview with UFC.com, the former interim champion outlined his dream matchups once he secures the title.

Expressing a personal vendetta, Covington targeted Dustin Poirier, whom he mockingly calls “Dustin Soy-rier.'” He stated, “’ He’s the one that got me kicked out of my old gym by crying and having feelings, saying, ‘Oh, Colby is a mean person. Kick him out of our gym,’ while we get locked in an octagon to hurt each other in our underwear on Saturday nights.”

Covington went on to further claim that Poirier is “afraid” of him and the proposed matchup between the two will never take place because ‘The Diamond’ is “scared” of him. As Covington looks ahead to UFC 296, where he faces Leon Edwards, he has also dismissed Edwards as “Scissorhands” and challenged the notion of Edwards being unbeatable. In summary, Covington’s post-fight aspirations reveal a mix of sporting rivalries and personal vendettas, shaping his vision for the future in the UFC.
