Gervonta Davis is back. After a layoff of almost a year, it is Frank Martin who welcomes him back in the boxing ring, with the WBA lightweight strap on the line. While the reports have the boxing world buzzing, one man is sitting frustrated: Shakur Stevenson. Instead of venting his resentment, he has responded with a funny comment.

‘Sugar’ turned to his Instagram handle and shared a clip with the caption, “Shakur seeing Tank vs Martin get signed” where a man throws his wine glass in frustration and screams “sh*t.” “Nah this was funny ngl,” he replied. Interestingly, both Davis and Martin share a history with the WBC lightweight champion. Both have turned down a fight with Stevenson in the past, especially Martin, who passed on the offer in the fall.

Earlier, it was Mike Coppinger who announced the return of ‘Tank’. “Gervonta Davis and Frank Martin have agreed to a deal for a PBC PPV fight in late spring/early summer for Tank’s WBA lightweight title…” the ESPN correspondent wrote on his X handle

Notably, Davis ran into troubles with authorities, which derailed his career and denied him the opportunity to turn up for a fight in the second half of the year. Meanwhile, Stevenson recently turned back on his decision to hang his boxing gloves, after failing to nab a quality opponent.

What’s next for Shakur Stevenson?

The 26-year-old announced his retirement, frustrated by criticism of his lackluster performance against Edwin De Los Santos and difficulty in signing deals with ‘Tank’ or Emmanuel Navarrete. However, that didn’t last long, as he soon backtracked on his words. “I’ll fight any and everybody this what I do.. See y’all in June,” Stevenson wrote.

Bob Arum is on the lookout for an ideal opponent for him. While the American boxer has flirted with the idea of a showdown with Teofimo Lopez, it’s hard to imagine him moving up to a division brimming with the likes of Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney. Apart from Davis, there is a lack of notable names in the 135-pound division.

The same could afford him an opportunity to make the division synonymous with him. But his non-flashy style and last performance have him in a tight position, where top fighters are dodging a fight with him.

One take at a time

I hail from a family of passionate sports lovers, especially combat sports. It is from there that I realized how aptly combat sports embody life. The words of Jeremy Lesniak, "It's not about learning to fight, it's about learning to be better through the expression of action" resonated with the interest I had in combat sports.
