Shakur Stevenson Questions William Zepeda’s Destructive Skills While Hyping Up a Potential Fight

William Zepeda scored an emphatic victory over Daniel ‘Maxi’ Hughes. However, it seems to have added a new twist to the lightweight landscape. The win has made the undefeated Mexican a mandatory challenger to the WBA and IBF titles. Hence, it sparked speculations of a line-up against Gervonta Davis (now Abdul Wahid), the WBA lightweight champion. But the fact also remains that he is currently ranked number one on the WBC lightweight list. Shakur Stevenson brought attention to the fact for everyone to remember.
The Newark-born southpaw believes a face-off with Zepeda could make for an exciting fight. Nevertheless, Stevenson couldn’t resist questioning Zepeda’s prowess as a fighter, as his latest tweet might depict.

Yesterday evening, Shakur Stevenson called William Zepeda a ‘real killer’. Given that he doesn’t have any fights lined up in front of him, a match with the Mexican southpaw makes much sense. “He also #1 for the WBC.. A real killer right in front of me, and I don’t any opponent lined up. #StevensonZepeda, next, let’s make it happen!!” said the Olympic silver medalist.

But early today, he rhymed a different note. So ‘Maxi’ Hughes lost his IBP lightweight title after giving a tough fight to George Kambosos Jr. on July 22 last year. Hence, Stevenson posits, the English boxer lost his title by a majority decision to the ‘Ferocious’. But he could barely withstand Zepeda’s onslaught. So where do the winners stand? Is Kambosos Jr. a good boxer? Or better yet, a win over the boxer who gave the Aussie fighter a run for his money puts ‘Camaron’ in a better position.

He asked, “If Maxi Hughes gave Kambosas the fight of his life but Zepeda DESTROYED him, how good is Kambosas, or the better question is, how good is Zepeda?” Nevertheless, he expressed excitement over the matchup with William Zepeda. “I’m excited. Let’s make #StevensonZepeda next, pls – Pressure bust pipes or make diamonds #ChasingGreatness,” said the WBC lightweight champion.

So how does it echo at the other end of the street?
Mirroring Opinions?
Even William Zepeda seems intrigued by a possible fight against Shakur Stevenson or ‘Tank’. Reportedly, post-fight, he said, “I am ready for Shakur, Gervonta… Whoever is on that list, we’re going after. Now who has to do their homework is Oscar De La Hoya.”
‘The Golden Boy’, it seems, was already ready, as he checked with both boxers over a tweet. Then there are also reports that Top Rank’s Bob Arum appears willing to entertain a match between Shakur Stevenson and William Zepeda.
Bob Arum has now welcomed the possibility of Shakur Stevenson vs William Zepeda happening next: “Let Oscar De La Hoya call me and I’ll get that fight done for July. We have a date, July 6th, the Prudential Center is reserved. We certainly would consider him.” [@BoxingScene]

It’s been four months since Shakur Stevenson saw the face of the ring. During this time, after winning a vacant lightweight title, fans saw him announce an early retirement, which thankfully proved short-lived. Initially, he had suggested a tentative return by June. The three-division champion might have positioned himself as a reliable substitute for Ryan Garcia in case he pulled out of the April 20 fight against Devin Haney.
However, a fight with a fellow lightweight seems much closer to home. Regardless of the circumstances, fans are eager to see Shakur Stevenson make a swift return to the ring.

If the fight with William Zepeda gets on track, do you think it will be another Edwin De Los Santos fight, or will the ‘Camaron’ prove himself an all-together different ballgame?
