As football fans and Swifties scanned the field for any sign of Taylor Swift, they ended up disappointed. After three weeks of hype around the rumored Kelce-Swift relationship, she did not wish him on his birthday or attend Sunday’s Vikings game. Swift’s absence proved to be a mixed bag of sorts for Kelce.

As the second half was about to close, with the Chiefs and Vikings tied at 13-13, Kelce crashed to the ground. Chiefs fans worried that the artificial turf of the US Bank Stadium will cost them their star TE. But it was not to be.

In the post-game interaction with the media, Patrick Mahomes spoke about his chemistry with Kelce. When the ball had just been snapped in the third quarter, Mahomes was at a loss as to whom to pass the ball to. None of his teammates were free. “I am about to get crushed, and then I look over, and 87 is just running free.” Just in the nick of time, when he thought he was about to be sacked, he found his best chum, Travis Kelce, running across the field, free. And then that was it. He saw an opening and passed the ball — and touchdown!

This is entirely admirable, considering the fact that minutes ago, he was on the ground, clutching his feet because of the non-contact injury. And now he was running across the field, scoring a touchdown. That indicated that things were, thankfully, all well with the TE, and the injury wasn’t a serious one. Mahomes also admitted that they have been playing together for five years, and Kelce knows Mahomes better than anyone else. Whenever Mahomes is in trouble, Kelce is in for the rescue! But often, these injuries have a way of getting worse with time and only manifesting their full severity days down the line.

What Kelce’s absence could mean for the Chiefs

We will have to wait for the upcoming week’s injury report to see if Kelce participates in the three-day practice sessions leading to Week 6. The last time Kelce had missed a match, things ended badly for the Chiefs. In their season opener against the Detroit Lions, Kelce was out because of a leg injury. And the Chiefs lost to the Lions 0-1. That’s the only defeat they have had to endure so far this entire season. Otherwise, they would have had a perfect record of 1.000.

On October 13, the 4-1 Chiefs are up against a 1-4 Broncos. While it seemed that the Broncos had finally reversed their losing streak with their victory over the Bears, they again ended up losing to the Jets on Sunday. It seems like only a miracle can save Denver now. But the Chiefs should not get too complacent either. In football, the odds change faster than Mahomes’ throws or Tyreek Hill’s sprints.
