The WWE Championship stands as the most prestigious pro wrestling title in the world. The Tribal Chief Roman Reigns is currently in his second championship reign and has surpassed 1160 days as champion. In fact, he may soon overtake the championship run record of Hulk Hogan which stands at 1474 days.

Despite being super close to the championship duration record of The Hulkster, Roman Reigns is severely lacking in another record. While the duration of both champions will soon be near-identical, Reigns doesn’t stand even remotely close to a more significant indicator of worthiness. In fact, this huge difference can severely devalue Reigns’ championship run.

Roman Reigns started his current championship reign after snatching the title from the late Bray Wyatt on 30 August 2020. The Tribal Chief has defended his WWE Championship title many times since, with the latest successful title defense coming against LA Knight at Crown Jewel 2023. However, despite being the ‘Undisputed Champion’ for 1160+ days, this was just Reigns’ 54th title defense.

While this may appear as a significant number, it is nothing but a speck when compared to Hulk Hogan’s record. The mighty Hulkster far surpasses Roman Reigns, with 468 title defenses as the reigning champion of his time.

Hulk Hogan retained his championship title for 1474 days during his longest run. Even if Reigns defends his title every day, he still won’t be able to reach the milestone set by Hogan before reaching 1474 days himself. Compared to Hogan, Reigns’ longstanding run looks very hollow. Especially since he has been absent from the ring since SummerSlam for the last 90 days of his championship run.

Although this paints a very weak and fragile image of Roman Reigns, The Tribal Chief also holds a lot of substance. He may have not defended his title even a hundred times. But, each and every one of his 54 wins carry a significant weight. In fact, Reigns has defended his title against some of the fiercest names.

The titans defeated by The Tribal Chief to retain his title

Hulk Hogan acquired his championship title from The Iron Sheik on 23 Jan 1984 in a spectacular showdown. His title run later brought WWE international recognition, which was later ended by Andre the Giant on 5 February 1988. While Hogan faced both big and small names during his run, Reigns has almost exclusively been challenged by the heavyweights of WWE.

Reigns has defended his title against Finn Balor, Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Rey Mysterio, and Jey Uso along with several wrestling megastars. He has also overcome even more formidable opponents like Seth Rollins, John Cena, Cody Rhodes, Edge, and Daniel Bryan. The list also contains the names of more punishing wrestlers like Braun Strowman, Brock Lesnar, and Goldberg.

Just half of these names have thrashed almost the entire WWE locker room across several eras. While Hulk Hogan has also bested several big names, Roman Reigns doesn’t fall short of his own list of dragons he has slain. Whether or not Reigns will be able to overcome Hogan’s record is a subject of its own.
