Errol Spence Reveals Why 2023 Has Been a “Great Year for Boxing”

The boxing world right now is at its strongest, with the whole year witnessing a high number of huge fights compared to recent years. Much of it can be said to be a consequence of the Bout between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia. Since then several huge fights have already taken place such as Devin Haney vs Vasyl Lomachenko and David Benavidez vs Caleb Plant. Moreover, fights such as Stephen Fulton vs Naoya Inoue are also on the way. However, perhaps the biggest of them all Errol Spence Jr. Vs Terence Crawford is going to take place soon as well.

With the huge anticipation among the fans for the fight, Spence Jr. has shared how happy he is to fight in a year where so many great fights are taking place. Errol Spence Jr opened up about the influence of such fights on overall boxing in a recent press conference held at Palladium Times Square.

During the press conference, the IBF, WBA, and WBC Welterweight champion said, “I feel like it’s been a great year for boxing”. He pointed out the great fights that have or will be taking place this year. He claimed that it also provides “great opportunities” to the boxers as well. Moreover, he believes that the “best guys are finally fighting each other”. The undefeated boxer acknowledged that this is good for both the boxers and the enthusiasts.

Furthermore, Spence hopes that this trend will only continue to grow, and we will get to witness such fights even in the next year as well. He optimistically shared his desires, “We just gonna keep doing it and hopefully, you know, we keep on for next year and it goes to [the] next year and it keep carrying on and, you know, we just keep having great matches.”

‘The Truth’ talks about the Mayweather effect

The trend of boxers picking opponents of lower caliber in order to maintain and continue their undefeated status has been on the rise.  Spence Jr. brought Floyd Mayweather Jr. to the conversation. He claimed that before Mayweather rose to fame, it was common for fighters to lose. He pointed out how ‘Money’ has managed to influence the new generation of boxers.

‘The Truth’ claimed that boxers want to be like Mayweather and keep their record unbroken. However, he also added that Mayweather had a “blessed career” and that it was a “once in a lifetime” occurrence. ‘The Truth’ spoke about how boxers have deviated from their original goals and are afraid of losing and taking risks. Spence claimed that the fighters should always focus on fighting the best. According to Spence Jr., if someone wants to be the best then they “gotta take risks”.
