Historical Background of the Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens were established in 1996 as a result of a controversial move by then-Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell. Facing financial difficulties and seeking a better stadium deal, Modell announced in 1995 that he would relocate the Browns to Baltimore. After intense backlash from Cleveland fans and intervention by the NFL, a compromise was reached: Cleveland would retain the Browns’ name, colors, and history, while Modell’s organization would become a new franchise in Baltimore—thus, the Ravens were born.

The team held a name-the-team contest, and “Ravens” was selected as a tribute to Edgar Allan Poe, the renowned poet who spent much of his life in Baltimore and wrote the iconic poem "The Raven.” The franchise quickly gained respect in the league, known especially for its strong defensive identity. In just their fifth season (2000), the Ravens won their first Super Bowl with a historically dominant defense led by linebacker Ray Lewis. Over the years, they continued to be a playoff contender, and in 2012, they secured their second Super Bowl title, again with Ray Lewis, this time in his final season, and quarterback Joe Flacco earned MVP honors.

Ownership transitioned to Steve Bisciotti, and the franchise maintained stability and competitiveness. The Ravens are also known for their player development and smart front-office decisions, including the drafting of Lamar Jackson in 2018, who would go on to win the NFL MVP in 2019. Throughout their history, the Ravens have built a strong identity rooted in resilience, community pride, and excellence on the field.
