For the Sacramento Kings, Ben Simmons’ latest attempt at a comeback has effectively come to an end. Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors are dealing with a scare of their own after Stephen Curry limped off the court in visible pain. Before the season has even begun, both situations serve as a reminder of how quickly an NBA team’s plans can unravel.

Heartbreak in Sacramento: Ben Simmons tears his right achilles tendon

The Kings came into Sunday’s practice with a lot of optimism, only to see that all disappear during the live scrimmage. Ben Simmons had a bad lower leg injury in the scrimmage. As per an official press release, the diagnosis was straight away and very bad.

“Sacramento Kings guard Ben Simmons was injured during a live drill in practice on Sunday, Oct. 18. An MRI revealed a torn right Achilles tendon. Simmons will undergo surgery,” it said.

Later, ESPN’s Shams Charania shared, “An MRI confirmed a season-ending torn right Achilles tendon for Ben Simmons. A devastating turn of events on the eve of his NBA return after rehabilitating from back surgeries.”

The timing is absolutely brutal for the 30-year-old former ROY and three-time All-Star.

Simmons had put together some solid pre-season minutes with the Kings. The Achilles tear came around the same time ESPN released their documentary ‘Being Ben’. The documentary details his journey through a string of back surgeries (the May 2022 microdiscectomy and the March 2024 nerve decompression).

However, Simmons has refused to give up after the recent injury.

“I’ve faced challenges before that tested me mentally, physically, and emotionally, and I’ve found a way through every single one of them. This injury is another chapter in my journey, not the end of my story,” Simmons wrote on his Instagram story.

“It’s never easy being away from the game I love, especially after everything it took to get back here. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that adversity doesn’t define you. How you respond to it does. I’ve been knocked down before, and I’ve always found a way to get back up. This time will be no different.”

Huge panic as Stephen Curry limps off during Warriors scrimmage

Right down the road in San Francisco at Chase Center during the Warriors’ open practice, a rather alarming scene took place. A video went viral on social media showing Steph Curry limping towards the tunnel after a scrimmage. He clearly looked in pain. The Warriors were just about to kick off their season with an evening game against the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena, and the footage naturally caused a great deal of concern.

The image caused a bit of a stir in terms of whether Curry might be suffering a repeat of the right knee issues that kept him out for 27 games with runner’s knee last season.

However, Warriors reporter Anthony Slater ended the concerns on X.

“It’s a right ankle tweak for Steph Curry and not knee, per team. Positive news for the Warriors.”

A team source described the ankle sprain as “not serious,” but again, no confirmation has been given as to Curry’s availability for the season opener.

Head coach Steve Kerr moved quickly to quell the panic in his post-practice media session, offering an initial breath of relief.

“I went and spoke to him in the training room, and he’s fine,” Kerr said. Despite Kerr’s reassurance, the medical staff is in a tricky risk management situation. Curry’s battle with ankle stability in his early days required surgery and a whole suite of lower-body protocols.

Ripple effects across the Western Conference

The sheer disparity in the severity of the injuries means both clubs are now facing immediate operational issues. For the Kings, Simmons’ injury effectively ends their low risk/high upside play-making experiment. It had clearly shown some genuine two-way potential in training camp. But Sacramento is now going to have to rework their perimeter depth chart without the facilitator they were counting on to bring back his all-star form.

For the Warriors, the margin for error is absolutely tiny. Their rotation is already stretched thin with Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody out with knee injuries and Kristaps Porziņģis out with health issues.

If they go the cautious route and leave Curry out against the Lakers, then Kerr is going to be relying very heavily on the young ballhandlers in the rotation to create the shots. They’ll be supported by Draymond Green’s defensive presence.

Rodriguez denied being the person behind the voice heard during the viral Kings Media Day conversation. The NBC Sports Bay Area journalist said the incident had nothing to do with her. However, she still faced online criticism and abuse. She used X to address the situation and clear up the confusion.

Before discussing the online reaction, Rodriguez first made it clear that the voice heard during Kings Media Day was not hers. She also explained why she decided to speak publicly about the issue.

In the first part of her X post, she wrote, “The past few days have been tough. I got dragged into something that had nothing to do with me, and I watched my name and reputation be tarnished across the internet. To be very clear—that was not my voice at Kings Media Day.”

Rodriguez then said the online reaction went beyond normal criticism. She said people sent horrific messages to her mentions and direct messages. The journalist also thanked the people who knew her and quickly understood that the voice was not hers.

“I want to clear my name, not for the trolls who have flooded my mentions and DMs with horrific messages, but for myself. Thank you to those who know me and know my professionalism and immediately knew that wasn’t me,” Rodriguez shared. “Your messages, support and love have gone a long way over these extremely dark days.”

Rodriguez ended her post by saying she wants to move on.

“I’m looking forward to another exciting NBA season and continuing to do what I do best — my job,” Rodriguez concluded.

Rodriguez wanted to focus on her work as the new NBA season starts.

What happened at Kings Media Day?

The controversy started on Monday, September 28, 2026, during the Sacramento Kings’ Media Day. The team was livestreaming player press conferences. However, the microphones also picked up a conversation between media members as they waited for the next player.

The conversation focused on the Kings’ players Ben Simmons and Zach LaVine. One female reporter called Simmons “cringe.” Another voice then said Simmons was “lucky he’s so fine.” The conversation continued with comments about Simmons’ appearance, including his smooth skin and lack of tattoos.

The reporters then talked about Zach LaVine. One female voice called him “hella fine.” Another said LaVine was attractive but disliked his personality. She said his personality “f****** annoys” her and that he seemed like a “prick.”

The speakers apparently did not know that their conversation was still being broadcast. The clip soon spread across social media, and the Kings removed the livestream. However, copies of the footage continued to appear online. Early reports did not identify the reporters heard in the clip.

This lack of confirmed identities became important as people online tried to figure out who was speaking. Rodriguez then became part of the discussion, even though she has now directly said that the voice was not hers.

Rodriguez is a sports journalist and Digital Content Editor at NBC Sports Bay Area. She regularly covers the Sacramento Kings and other Bay Area sports. Her work includes news, analysis, player interviews, and NBA stories.

Rodriguez was also working at Kings Media Day. On September 28, she published a story about Ben Simmons returning to the NBA with Sacramento after spending the previous season away from the league. The next day, she published a story about the Kings’ rookie Darius Acuff Jr.

This makes the controversy especially relevant to her. She was at the event as a working journalist, but she now says the voice heard in the viral conversation did not belong to her.

The Kings’ hot-mic incident has now become more than a story about comments involving Simmons and LaVine. Rodriguez’s statement has added another part to the story as she tries to separate herself from a conversation she says she did not have.

Rodriguez now wants to refocus on the NBA season and her regular work covering the Kings.

The Akron Hammer and the Lakers’ head coach, Darvin Ham, praised the 23-year-old forward’s performance. Ham even spoke about James’ charge on the 23-year-old forward and mocked James, calling it “Standing in the middle of a highway in front of a Mack Truck.”

I asked Darvin Ham about the charge LeBron James took on Zion Williamson.
“Like standing in the middle of a highway in front of a Mack Truck.”

— Dan Woike (@DanWoikeSports) April 17, 2024

During a crucial point in the first half of the game, LeBron James attempted to draw an offensive foul on Zion Williamson by standing in front of him and preparing for contact. James, who is known for his ability to absorb hard play, set himself to take the charge, trying to shift the momentum in the Lakers’ favor. However Williamson, at 6’6” and 284 pounds, has a unique mix of size, speed, and power that makes him a formidable opponent for any defense. So as he surged toward the basket with his trademark force and explosiveness, the collision between the two superstars was rough with Williamson’s bulk and velocity overpowering James and sending the Lakers’ star tumbling to the floor.

For the majority of the game, he did exactly that. He outplayed James and Davis, leading his team and showing the dominance that we’ve all been expecting from him. However, the 2x All-star sadly incurred an injury and had to exit the court in the middle of the game leaving his job unfinished.

How did Zion Williamson get hurt?

Late in the fourth quarter of his game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Zion Williamson looked like he hurt his left leg. Williamson staggered off the floor after scoring his 40th point against LeBron James and did not return to play. Pelicans head coach Willie Green eventually revealed that Williamson departed the game due to a left leg pain. Following the game, Williamson was spotted leaving the locker room with no visible limp or wrap on his leg, and he appeared to be in decent condition. However, as the level of his injury is unknown, he will undergo imaging on Wednesday to determine the cause and extent of the injury.

Now as the Pelicans face the Sacramento Kings in the Western Conference play-in final on Friday, the loss of the 2x All-Star comes at a crucial time. As of now the status of Williamson for that game is uncertain, but the Pelicans and their fans waiting for more information about his condition and hoping that their star forward returns and aids them in playoff glory. What do you think, will Zion Williamson be able to make his comeback on time? Let us know in the comments below.

Soon, with staff and Derrick Lively around him, Irving slowly headed toward the locker room. The commentators, from what it seems like, predicted Kyrie’s lower leg/knee to lock up. While much details weren’t made available, Kyrie returned well to the court by the game’s end.

Irving has proven to be the perfect player alongside Luka Doncic. Together, the two have shared the on-court leadership role, floating the Mavs ahead of the Play-in pool.

Additionally, Irving has been a crucial element in Dallas’ 5 game-winning run. Seeing more than 35 minutes of court time, the crafty guard is posting 23.8 points, 6.4 assists, and 5 rebounds. Moreover, he contributes over 47% shooting from the floor, alongside a decreased 30% efficiency from the three-point line.

With that, as Irving stepped away from the ball game, fans crossed their fingers in light of an update. Luckily, Irving was soon cleared to return and lead the Mavericks past a red-hot Sacramento squad.

Kyrie Irving took the game over in 4th quarter

The Mavericks were facing a deficit since the opening minutes of the game. They trailed by 8 to start the second quarter, extending it to 9 at the half. Moreover, as Kyrie left the court, the Mavs, due to Sacramento’s decreased scoring, managed to even the quarter with 22 points each.

Entering the fourth at the shorter end of a 73-82 score, Irving gripped the Dallas’ offense with his iconic fourth-quarter takeover. As a result, the Mavs posted their best quarter of the game, scoring 34 points; all while, limiting the Sactown to their lowest, 21 points.

Irving, beginning the quarter with 16 points to his name, ended with 30 at the final buzzer. The guard scored 14 points in the last stretch, behind two triples and a couple of shots inside the arc. There were no signs of his injury scare, as Irving relentlessly attacked the Sacramento defense, all while shooting 100% from the field and garnering 5 trips to the free throw line.

On the other hand, Doncic continued his near triple-double endeavor, scoring 26 points, 12 assists, and 9 rebounds. Dallas handed the Kings their second loss in a back-to-back, winning the game 107-103.

With that, and a 6-game winning streak, the Mavs will now head toward the Toyota Center to face the Houston Rockets, who are on a 10-game winning run. Meanwhile, the Kings wish to climb out of the 8th spot in the West after hosting the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Clippers.

Unfortunately, Victor Wembanyama cannot redeem himself as he has been ruled out of Thursdayâ€s game. The 20-year-old rookie is dealing with a right ankle sprain and will not suit up for the Kings clash. That is a massive blow for the Spurs, who are already at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Despite Wembanyamaâ€s historic rookie season, the Spurs are having an abysmal season. They have won only 13 games so far and have the worst record in the West.

Wembanyama will miss Thursday’s game at Sacramento with a right ankle sprain, per Spurs.

— Tom Orsborn (@tom_orsborn) March 7, 2024

Without Wembanyama in the lineup, the Sacramento Kings might blow past San Antonio on Thursday. The rookie has been by far the best player on the Spurs roster throughout the season. Wembanyama is averaging 20.7 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. He is also the frontrunner to win this yearâ€s ROTY award. Not only is Wembanyama a great offensive player, but he is also a menace on defense. The 20-year-old is leading the league in blocks (3.4) as a rookie and is averaging 1.3 steals per game to go along with it. With Wemby out for tomorrowâ€s game, other players on the Spurs roster will need to step up to make the game competitive.

San Antonio Spurs need to start building around Victor Wembanyama

It is clear from Wembanyamaâ€s rookie season performance that he is a generational talent. While many believed before the season started that Wemby was overhyped, the rookie has silenced the critics with his alienlike abilities. With only 20 games left in the regular season and no chance to make the playoffs, the Spurs front office needs to start planning the future. Now that Wembanyama has proved his worth, the Spurs need to surround him with the right pieces to build a Championship team.

The Spurs currently do not have any star players except Wembanyama. This off-season will be crucial for their future as the right moves can elevate them to a playoff-level team next season. While the NBA has never seen a player like Wembanyama, there is usually a huge risk of injury with players of his height. Many 7-footers have historically had their careers shortened due to injuries. So, the Spurs need to capitalize on their Championship window while it is still open.

Tonight too, the 6x All-Star is missing. Due to an altercation on Friday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Butler, along with several players, received suspension. Unsurprisingly, Jaquez has taken Butler’s place and doing an excellent job at it.

So much so that Heat fans are taking to X to record their awe at the young forward. One user called him a “fuc*in dog,” to show his heartfelt appreciation for how well he handles himself on-court.

Yet another fan has a similar reaction to the first user. Dez also likens Jaime Jazquez Jr. to a “dog”.

Another user seems to take comfort in his confidence in Jaquez’s ability to secure the future of the franchise.

Finally, this user brings attention to the fact that Jaime is the “best Mexican hooper” he’s seen.

— cjballin (@1717Creek) February 27, 2024

Clearly, Jaquez seems determined to keep the promise he made to Butler ahead of tonight’s game. The 23-year-old said during the warm-up that he, and the rest of the team, was going to fight for Jimmy and the other suspended players. He further clarified that everyone was going to stay ready whenever their names were going to be called. Jaquez reiterated that they were “fighting for those guys tonight”.

And the team kept their promise, too. The Heat defeated the Kings 121-110. But Friday night was all hands on deck. Or rather, all hands in a scuffle.

New Orleans and Miami raise the heat with a nasty fracas

Zion Williamson was fouled hard by Kevin Love, landing the former on the floor. Naji Marshall was nearby and ran towards Love to give him a good old shove. The whole game was a tight contest from the get-go. And now that Butler saw the opening, he didn’t hesitate to throw himself in the fray.

Jimmy pushed Marshall off and kept his hand on the Pelicans big man’s chest. He didn’t like it and went straight for the throat. That was the start of an old-fashioned brawl mid-game. Players, coaches, and referees rushed to separate the two. No sooner was it calm in the paint, than Thomas Bryant and Nikola Jovic got into it with New Orleans guard, Jose Alvarado at the officials bench.

At the end of it, Butler, Jovic, Bryant, Marshall, and Alvarado were the five players who got ejected and suspended. Jimmy was fined $259,968, Bryant, $52,308, while Jovic will lose $12,655. For the Pelicans, Alvarado got a fine of $37,988 and Marshall $11,096.

The Nuggets were leading the Kings by 9 points with 4 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Jokic was unhappy about a call on the offensive end and was constantly chirping at the referee. The official eventually called a technical foul on Jokic after the Kings scored a basket on the other end. The Joker was livid after the call and charged aggressively towards the official to confront him. Fortunately, the officialâ€s back was turned towards the charging Jokic because he was focused on Nuggets head coach Mike Malone. Malone started yelling at the official after Jokic got Tâ€d up, leading to a technical foul on him as well.

— Kings on NBCS (@NBCSKings) February 15, 2024

Had the official seen Jokic charging toward him after the call, the 2-time MVP could have been ejected from the game. So, in a way, Maloneâ€s outrage saved his superstar from a severe penalty. Jokicâ€s teammates tried to calm him down and stopped him from escalating the situation. Jokic kept following the official after the call but started walking to the bench before the referee turned towards him. While Harrison Barnes was shooting the free throws, Jokic walked back to the official to give him a piece of his mind. Luckily, the referee let go of the situation and did not call Jokic for his second technical foul.

Was tonight Nikola Jokićâ€s worst game of the season?

The confrontation between Jokic and the official gave a slight edge to the Sacramento Kings for the remainder of the game. Deâ€Aaron Fox and Co. muscled a comeback late in the third quarter and came out with a win over the defending Champions. The Joker had arguably his worst performance of this season. He finished with only 15 points, 8 assists, and 5 rebounds and was unable to lead his team to victory.

Jokic has been dominant all season, averaging 26.3 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 9 assists. He has become the new frontrunner to win the MVP trophy after Joel Embiid became ineligible because of the new 65-game rule. However, Jokic could not perform at an MVP level against the Kings and would want to erase tonightâ€s game from his memory.

Phoenix managed to stay on course as they finished 130-125 to take home the win against the Kings. But it was Devin Booker who stole the spotlight. With 13,912 points, Booker moved to the second position in the All-Time points list in Suns’ franchise history!

Sacramento, for their part, is fresh off a loss against the high-flying OKC Thunder. They also had a horrible loss against the bottom-ranked Detroit Pistons on February 7th. So, there was no doubt that they would look to get back on top. Unfortunately, that did not happen.

But Domantas Sabonis was on a fiery streak. He got his 17th triple-double of the season with 35 points, 12 assists, and 18 rebounds – a game-high, as well. Except for De’Aaron Fox, who landed 40 points, there was no one tonight who came close to Sabonis’ numbers on either team.

On the 9th, the Lithuanian-American had notched his 16th triple-double vs the Nuggets in a dominant 135-106 win. Clearly, he was a man with a mission. Yet, his dominance couldn’t help pull the Kings over the edge.

The Kings vs Suns

KD and Booker took the lead for the Suns’ win as they scored 28 and 25, respectively. Durant finished with a double-double of his own (28-11). It wasn’t until the game moved to the second half that the Suns started heating up. They managed to get over an 11-point deficit to take a 94-92 lead moving to the fourth quarter.

Phoenix‘s recent acquisition, Royce O’Neal hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth to push them 103-94 early. But Sabonis was at hand to tie the game at 108 with 5 minutes left on the clock. It was from this point that the matchup became a tight-knit game. Another O’Neal three-pointer saw the Suns at 122-118 with 47 seconds left.

Fox was right behind with his own three to cut the gap to 122-121 (41 secs). Booker came along with a jumper after a timeout to push the lead again to 124-121 and from thereon, the Suns did not relinquish control. Including tonight’s game, Phoenix and Sacramento are on par this season with the wins.

In the games played in December, the Kings secured both victories. But January 16th and tonight saw the Suns with the win. In 249 games played by both teams, the “Valley” holds the most wins at 145 to the Kings’ 104. Sacramento still has a long way to go.

In addition, the Thunder will also be without the services of Bismack Biyombo, who is not with the team. On the other side of the court, the Kings will be without Chris Duarte as he is dealing with a right ankle sprain and will be re-evaluated in a few days. Sasha Vezenkov will also miss the game due to a right ankle sprain.

Thunder vs. Kings: Predicted starting lineups

Sunday’s game will mark their third meeting this season, with both the previous ones ending in favor of the Kings. Although OKC started their season strong, even reaching the top at one point, they have been wobbly for the past few days, winning only six of their last 10 games. They are also dealing with a two-game losing streak after being blown out by the Dallas Mavericks by 35 points on Saturday with a final scoreline of 146-111.

This resulted in them dropping to fourth place in the West. Thus, they need to avenge their previous two defeats tonight to get back into the winning column. Therefore, they can start the game with Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, and Lu Dort.

Even though the Kings have won their last two head-to-head games, they are behind the Thunder in the Conference standings. A win tonight might help them dethrone the Thunder and climb to the fourth spot in the West. They are riding on a massive 29-point win over the defending champion Denver Nuggets and will hope to start their three-game road trip on a positive note. Therefore, the Kings starting lineup might feature Domantas Sabonis, Harrison Barnes, Keegan Murray, Deâ€Aaron Fox, and Kevin Huerter.

The broadcast captured Edwards impatiently shouting “cheating ass refs” while celebrating the close victory, and he went on to ramble about his frustrations during a post-game interview. In an honest remark, he said, “I don’t know how we got it done. I’m gonna take the fine because the refs did not give us no calls tonight. We had to play through every bump, every grab.”

Due to these comments of his, the NBA has fined Edwards $40,000 for publically criticizing the officiating.

40k?!?! Alright I have to say it’s absolutely BS that players get fined for RIGHTFULLY pointing out bad calls by officials

— Joshua Igwe (@Joshua___ig) January 31, 2024

So, as the league struggles to strike a balance between players’ freedom of speech and respect for officials, Edwards’ blunt remarks create a big stir in the 2023-2024 NBA season. However, this is not the first time that someone has been fined due to an official.

NBA imposes fines on coaches and players for arguing with officials

The NBA has imposed substantial penalties on Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown and Los Angeles Clippers player Paul George for their public criticism of NBA officials. Brown was fined $50,000 for aggressively approaching a referee during a game against Milwaukee and then using a laptop to criticize officiating in a post-game press conference. Meanwhile, George earned a $35,000 fine for openly criticizing officials during the Clippers’ defeat against the Denver Nuggets, expressing his dissatisfaction with the apparent lack of foul calls in his favor.

Due to George having a history of public criticism, the NBA determined his fine based on those grounds. However, both these incidences contribute to the continuing discussion over NBA officiating and the consequences that players and coaches face for expressing their views.

So, do you think the NBA should fine the players and coaches for voicing their distress? Let us know in the comments below.
