About Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota Vikings: 2025 Roster, Players, Schedule, Super Bowl Wins and More

The Minnesota Vikings are an American professional football team founded in 1961 and based in suburban Minneapolis, Minnesota, that plays in the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) of the National Football League (NFL). The Vikings have appeared in four Super Bowls and lost each time. One of the few NFL teams to be named after a state rather than a city, other teams sharing this unique trait are the Arizona Cardinals, the Tennessee Titans, and the Carolina Panthers. The Vikings joined the NFL in 1960, but the first professional team was the Minneapolis Marines/Red Jackets, an NFL team that played intermittently in the 1920s-30s. During home games, the Vikings' Gjallarhorn is loudly played and sounds often after the team has made a big play, gets a first down, or scores a touchdown. The horn's sound is in the interval of a Minor sixth in Western music. The term Vikings pays tribute to the state's Scandinavian heritage. As with the Vikings' entry into professional football, the state received a team after three decades.

The Vikes’ jersey colors are purple and gold, and their fight song, ‘Skol Vikings,’ is popular and features at every single one of their home games.  Their fan base, known as the "Skol Nation," is famous for its passionate support and the "Skol" chant. Their home games are played at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Viktor the Viking is the official mascot of the Minnesota Vikings. He is an anthropomorphic Viking character and embodies the team's bold, fierce, and fearless attitude. Depicted as a large Viking warrior with a horned helmet, purple and gold armor, and a beard. He made his first official appearance as the Minnesota Vikings mascot in 1994. He has since become a central figure at home games and team-related events. And is often seen performing stunts, dancing, and leading fans in cheers during game-day activities. His persona is meant to reflect the team’s Norse heritage, and he is a fan favorite at Vikings games.

Historical Background of the Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings franchise was founded in 1960 and began playing in the NFL in 1961. They have a long and storied past, despite having won only one NFL championship, in 1969, the year before the NFL–American Football League merger. The team’s first seasons were rocky, but by the late 1960s, the Vikings became a dominant force in the NFL, particularly on defense.

Particularly, the Purple People Eaters defense in the late 1960s and 1970s. The Vikings have won four NFC Championships and appeared in four Super Bowls (IV, VIII, IX, XI) but have yet to secure a title. Under their new owners, the Vikings have switched home fields twice. They vacated the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome and moved to the TCF Bank Stadium in 2014 and the U.S. Bank Stadium in 2016.

Notable Milestones and Achievements

The Vikings have appeared in four Super Bowls but have yet to win one. Their appearances were in the following years: Super Bowl IV (1970): Lost to the Kansas City Chiefs. Super Bowl VIII (1974): Lost to the Miami Dolphins. Super Bowl IX (1976): Lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Super Bowl XI (1977): Lost to the Oakland Raiders.

  • The Vikings have 20 NFC North division championships. Their first title came in 1968, and they’ve continued to be a competitive team in their division.
  • The Vikings have won 4 NFC Championships (1973, 1974, 1976, and 1977). These wins secured their trips to the Super Bowl.
  • The Vikings have made 30 playoff appearances, solidifying their place as a perennial contender in the NFC.

  • Dominated the 1970s with Fran Tarkenton, Alan Page, and Carl Eller leading the team.
  • One of the greatest offenses in NFL history with Randy Moss, Cris Carter, and Randall Cunningham (15-1 record) took place in the Vikings' 1998 season. A last-second touchdown by Stefon Diggs against the New Orleans Saints was one of the greatest moments in Vikings history.

Major Rivalries of the Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings-Packers rivalry, better known as the "Border Battle", is one of the most intense and long-standing rivalries in the NFL. This rivalry is largely due to their geographical proximity, with both teams located in the NFC North division and the two states (Minnesota and Wisconsin) being neighbors.

The Vikings-Bears rivalry, or the "NFC North Rivalry", is one of the oldest in the NFL. The Vikings and Bears have had several memorable matchups dating back to when the Vikings joined the league in 1961. Games between these two teams are often described as tough, physical, and hard-hitting.

Reflecting the blue-collar ethos of both fan bases. While the Bears historically had a better overall record (especially in the early days), the Vikings have often been their main competition in the NFC North since the 1970s.

The Vikings-Saints Rivalry is more recent but has grown due to high-stakes playoff games and dramatic finishes. This rivalry gained traction in the 2000s, especially due to the NFC Championship Game. The Vikings and Saints met in the NFC Championship Game after the 2009 season. The game is infamous for the “BountyGate” scandal and for the Saints defeating the Vikings in overtime to advance to the Super Bowl.

Major Contracts of the Minnesota Vikings in 2025

As the Minnesota Vikings aim to continue competing in the NFC North, they've made key contract moves to solidify their roster for the 2025 season. Here's a look at their major contracts:

  • Kirk Cousins (Quarterback)

Cousin remains the centerpiece of the Vikings' offense, and his $35 million cap hit for 2025 reflects his crucial role in leading the team. With a contract that extends through 2025, he's the highest-paid player on the roster, continuing to be the franchise’s key playmaker under center.
  • Justin Jefferson (Wide Receiver)

Jefferson, one of the NFL’s most dominant wide receivers, is set to make $27.5 million in 2025. After an impressive few seasons, the Vikings secured Jefferson with a contract extension that reflects his status as one of the top receivers in the game.
  • Daniil Hunter (Edge Rusher)

Hunter's contract for 2025 carries a $20.8 million cap hit. One of the league’s premier pass rushers, his ability to disrupt the opposing quarterback is crucial to the Vikings’ defense, and he’s one of their highest-paid defenders.
  • Za’Darius Smith (Edge Rusher)

Smith has a cap hit of $15.6 million in 2025, adding strength and depth to the Vikings' pass rush opposite Hunter. The Vikings’ defensive line continues to be one of their top priorities, and Smith plays a major role in keeping opposing offenses on their heels.
  • Harrison Smith (Safety)

Veteran safety Harrison Smith will see a $14.3 million cap hit in 2025. Smith is a key leader in the secondary and a consistent force in the Vikings' defense. His contract reflects his continued importance to the defense, especially in the leadership department.
  • Brian O’Neill (Right Tackle)

O'Neill's contract for 2025 carries a cap hit of $16 million. As the cornerstone of the Vikings' offensive line, O'Neill's ability to protect Cousins’ blindside is critical. His contract shows the Vikings' commitment to maintaining a strong offensive line.
  • Jordan Hicks (Linebacker)

Hicks will earn $12.5 million in 2025, making him a key contributor in the Vikings' linebacking corps. A veteran with leadership experience, Hicks plays a crucial role in both stopping the run and defending the pass.
  • Alexander Mattison (Running Back)

Mattison's cap hit for 2025 stands at $8.2 million. After taking on a larger role in the offense, his contract reflects his importance as the Vikings’ primary backfield option following Dalvin Cook's departure.
